Summer Journal

Happy Tuesday, friends!  I mentioned last month that I picked up a little journal at Target with plans of having the kids start a "summer journal" as something fun to look back on as well as sneak in a little writing practice.  We've been really enjoying it and so I thought I'd share today in case you'd like to start one with your family as well!

I picked  this journal because it had a space at the top for a drawing/photo and then lines below to write.

Several families went in together and sent teachers an Amazon gift card at the end of the school year which was THE SWEETEST (and such a great idea for when your kids have lots of teachers!) and I used mine to buy  this little printer. It connects wirelessly to my phone and prints 2x3 photos with sticker backs.  It's SO EASY to use and I love that I can preview the picture before we print.  Mason has a regular polaroid camera and he's wasted so much film with crummy pics - this prints photos from your phone so you know they're going to be better pics and you don't waste the film.

I will say that my photos have been printing a bit dark and I just read that I need to lighten them on my phone (not the app) before printing to correct this and I'll keep you posted!

The kids take turns writing/drawing and even after only a few weeks they're really enjoying flipping through the book (this pic is really dark! sorry!)

Mason is my "toughest sell" when it comes to writing... he'll draw all day but writing is not his favorite.  So sometimes I'll have to give him a prompt like "five things" to get him writing.

And yes... I've done a page or two as well because it's just so fun ;)

We've been experimenting with watercolors as well as taping in other items (like the dinosaur from Father's Day) and it has the kids thinking about other things they can add in which has been really fun.

I'm hoping that this kind of journaling is something that we can keep up throughout the years and look back on fondly as the kids grow up!

Happy Tuesday and happy journaling!

  1. what precious memories. My sister and I used to spend time w/ our grandparents in Wisconsin every summer at their lake home and we did journals about what we did each day. They are SOOO fun to pull out and read now. Such a great idea!

  3. This is such a fun idea!! I would love to do this when my daughter gets old enough. I kept a journal the summer I studied abroad in London, and it's my favorite "souvenir" from that summer. So special to look back on!

  5. Absolutely love this idea! Wondering if this is a journal with thicker pages and do the watercolors bleed through.

    1. When they do watercolors we put a piece of paper underneath it so it doesn't get the next pages wet.
