After 19 years my teacher achilles heel is ALWAYS attendance. I'm going to blame it on having to take it SIX TIMES A DAY but I'm just the worst. I'm bad at recording it, bad at remembering it, just BAD at it. Which isn't ideal since it's kind of a big deal when I'm grading, sorting out makeup work, etc.
A teacher friend taught one of his classes in my classroom last year and he used attendance questions and I loved it so much I decided to implement it in my room this year. Instead of just taking roll at the beginning of class and having kids say "here" I ask a random question and then their response is their "here". It's great because the kids don't let me forget! ;) hahaha
They look forward to the questions and it doubles as a fun little ice breaker as well.
Sometimes the questions are weird and prompt some super funny followup questions...
... and sometimes they're pretty basic.
Sometimes they're super involved and other times they're super simple.
If you use this in your classroom I'd love to hear your tips and tricks and I'd double love it if you'd leave your favorite questions to ask in the comments of this post.
If you don't use this (or aren't a teacher) I'd still love to hear your question ideas ;).
To wrap up I thought I'd share 9 weeks worth of questions just in case you're looking for some ideas to start with!

HAPPY TUESDAY, FRIENDS!!!
This is BRILLIANT!
ReplyDeleteThis is a great idea! I'm not a teacher but I am going to use some of these to start my monthly department meeting. I hate starting with the typical "how was everyone's weekend?" since we are approaching Halloween - "Candy Corn is the best/worst candy because ___________."
ReplyDeleteMy 14yr old was telling me his Algebra teacher does this and all the kids love it! I think it encourages them to be on time as well so they don't miss it. He was saying the question of the day last week was, "What famous person would you like to meet?"
