Staying Busy - Part II

I couple of weeks ago I shared a few things that we were doing to stay busy in  THIS POST and today I'm going to share a few more :)

First up is this super simple "fire extinguisher" experiment...

I put about 3 tablespoons of vinegar in a mason jar and then gave the kids 1 teaspoon of baking soda in a bowl.  They dumped the baking soda into the vinegar, waited for it to bubble all the way to the top and then "calm down a bit" and then they tilted the jar and watched the tea light go out.

Mason's faces during this were my FAVORITE...

We've done baking soda and vinegar experiments before so my kids knew that when you combine then it produces carbon dioxide but it was cool for them to see how the heavier gas spilled out of the jar and extinguished the flame by eliminating the oxygen.  Simple, easy and fun!

We also made a set of spinners which they really enjoyed.  I printed off some circle templates from HERE and each of the kids colored a set.

Then we cut them out, used double sided tape to tape one down onto cardboard, cut it out and then taped a second circle on the back.  We poked two holes through the center and threaded a long piece of yarn through the holes...

Then they "wound" spinner around until the yarn was all twisted and then pulled until it started spinning...

This video probably shows it better than I'm explaining...

Another quick little experiment we did used a bar magnet (Mason had a couple in a magnet kit he has), small tupperware and large bowl of water.  We taped down the magnet in the small tupperware, then floated the tupperware in a bowl of water.  We watched it move around and when it settled we labeled our compass...

... we did it multiple times and it ALWAYS settled in the same direction.  SO COOL!

When it got windy we brought our experiment inside and doubled it to see if they would both point the same direction...

... and they did!  So cool and a really simple discussion about poles and why north is always north, etc.

Next were these Monet-inspired bridge finger paintings....

We taped down bridges onto card stock using masking tape...

... and then the kids used regular washable paint and their fingers to create some impressionist art.

We peeled the tape (should have used painter's tape because it was kind of a hot mess) and voila!  A bridge!

Happy Wednesday and happy staying busy, friends!
