Reading and Listening

Happy Wednesday, friends!!!  Today I thought it would be fun to round up some of the things I've been reading and listening to and LOVING.  When it comes to podcasts I definitely have a type and it's true crime.

A reader recommended Bardstown and I LOVED IT!!!
It tells the story of three unsolved murders in the same Kentucky town and I thought it was really well done.

After I finished Bardstown, 88 days was listed as a recommendation and so I quickly fell down that rabbit hole.  Y'all.  This story is INSANE!!!!  Terrifying but still kind of hopeful (I don't want to give too much away) but INSANE!!!

I started Over My Dead Body a while ago but never finished it and I sped through season 1 over a few nights of my nightly walk.

I dove into Season 2 and IT WAS SO GOOD!!!  It was completely outrageous but such a great story.

And last (I know... what DIDN'T I listen to???) was Bear Brook.  It's the story of two barrels and four bodies and a serial killer BUT I found the most interesting part to be about how the crime was solved.  Again, I'm trying not to spoil anything but it brought up really great points about DNA and submitting your DNA to companies like Ancestry and 23 and Me and the implications that has for crime-solving and future generations.

I read  Magic Hour by Kristin Hannah and while it wasn't my favorite book by her I enjoyed it and it was different than all of her other books I've read.

I fiiiinally finished  Us Against You and didn't love it as much as Bear Town but I'm glad I read it because I felt like it gave some closure to the story lines in the first book.

I read  The Silent Patient in about two days and couldn't put it down.  It had a HUGE twist at the end and I may reread it just to see if I can pick up on things that I missed the first time.  HIGHLY recommend!!!

I'm almost done with  Recursion and y'all... it's nuts.  It's one of those books where there are parts that I have to go back and reread and I feel like I'm constantly going WHAT?!?!!  But it is SUCH A GREAT READ!!!!  At first you think there's some sort of pandemic happening but then you realize that it's actually so much crazier than that.  If you like a "twisty turny" thriller (I really don't know what else to call it) make sure you check it out!

I'd love to know what you've been listening to and reading!  Leave me a comment and let me know :)

  1. How long are some of those podcasts? I love listening to podcasts while I work but I cannot seem to get through nine hours about one story before losing interest? Are they all long? They sound so good, but maybe my true crime attention span is short?

  2. I am a little late to the game, but I am currently reading Mother-in-law. It's interesting. I feel like I should be more into it at this point, but I'm going to keep pushing through. I just finished the Tattooist of Auschwitz. It was amazing!! Highly recommend this one if you haven't read it. :)

  3. We love love podcasts and always love to get some good recommendations. If you want short little bursts of stories - Mike Rowe's That's How I Heard It is very good. And my all time favorite one is S-Town.

  5. I haven't ever gotten into podcasts but the ones you have mentioned sound intriguing! I would recommend American Kingpin if you're looking for a book to read. It's a true story and the entire time reading it I had to keep reminding myself that it actually took place. It's SO good!

  6. I also love true crime podcasts. I listen to Crime Junkie every Monday morning. I have an hour commute alone so this is when I listed to the Daily Bible reading and then a quick switch to true crime. I have added all of these to my list!

  7. Bardstown is only like an hour away from me, and it has been crazy to see all of the media- podcasts, documentaries, etc. It's also kind of crazy that it is all real, and not just entertainment. How has nothing been solved yet???

I'm going to save this list for reference! Thanks for sharing!

  8. I'm listening to Over My Dead Body right now. I didn't finish the first season, but I am enjoying the second season so much more. Probably because I've heard of Joe Exotic before. I'm in the middle of episode five right now.

  10. Have you ever listened to the podcast "My Favorite Murder". The two people doing the show are funny (somewhat off color) but it's something I keep going back to. They keep me entertained because I share their sick fascination of sensationalized murder cases. Worth trying for sure. I'll be adding your two to my list.

  12. I live about 30 minutes from Bardstown and everyone I know is obsessed with these cases. I went to daycare with the younger girl who was murdered, and to say people want justice is an understatement!

  13. I love crime podcasts. I really am enjoying dr Phil's mystery murder analysis podcast. He covers a certin case for about 5 episodes. It's very insightful and he often has direct interviews with the murder and family which is interesting. I also love crime junkies. Can't wait to try your suggestions. They get me through cleaning and my run!

  14. I've been debating about reading Recursion! I'm going to pick it up now!

This month I have been flying through books. So far I've read:
    -The Perfect Couple- meh
-Know My Name by Chantal Miller: Highly recommend! It was infuriating and inspiring to read..
-My Dark Vanessa: Definitely disturbing and rated R. I enjoyed it but some parts were just really hard to get through for me.
-The Miseducation of Henry Cane- If you are a fan of the TV Series Younger, You would like this one! Its Charles Brooks' novel.

  16. Being an office lover, if you don’t already listen to the “office ladies” podcast hosted by Jenna fisher (Pam) and Angela Kinsey (Angela), you definitely should! So great and love that they’re best friends in real life!
