Yesterday felt like our first "official" day of summer. We were all home together and had nothing on the agenda except hanging out in the yard so it seemed like the perfect time to try out a project that I've had on my to-try-list for EVER!
Here's all I used...
- 5 packages of sponges ($1.69/each at Target)
- Hair ties
I cut the sponges into fourths lengthwise...
... the boys put them into groups of 12...
... I wrapped the hair ties around the middle (three times to keep it tight)...
... and then the boys "fluffed" them. DONE! The 20 sponges made 7 "sponge bombs"... 5 with 12 strips and 2 with 10 each (total of 80 strips).
We immediately took them out for a spin and they were a HIT!
They hold a ton of water, don't hurt when you get hit with them (I know from experience! hahaha) and float.
Throughout the day the kids launched them at each other, threw them against the fence to make patterns and tried to throw them into a basket on the side of the pool while floating on the back of the turtle inflatable :)
These would be a fun "first day of summer surprise" and you could have a water fight in the driveway, would be a fun addition to a hot summer playdate and would actually be great for the tub too!
So easy and seriously so much fun! The whole project cost around $9 and is a craft even "non-crafty" people will love :)
Happy Summer, friends!
Totally doing this. So much fun!
ReplyDeleteYES! and so easy!!! He'll love it!
DeleteOf course you're crafting on your first day of summer. I would have been on a pool float and you're whipping something up out of sponges! Good job, Mama!!
ReplyDeleteGirl! Y'all need to make these!
DeleteWhen you said even "non crafty" people could do this...you were talking to me, right?! Because I actually think I might be able to! Ha! Those are super clever!!
ReplyDeleteFor sure! I am not even a little bit crafty, and I made these a few years ago. My kids LOVED them! (My oldest is allergic to latex, so balloons are out. These were a great substitute!)
DeletePretty much :) YOU CAN DO IT!!! hahaha
DeleteSo fun! I made these last summer and we played a game with them. I would much rather prefer we had a pool to play with them in though!! :)
ReplyDeleteWhat game did y'all do?? I'd love to know!
DeleteWe drew circles in the driveway and had point values for the different circles. Played catch with them. Tic tac toe on the driveway. Tried to catch them in a bucket. Can't wait to try in the pool this year. ( just finished putting one in)

DeleteOh, these are so fun! What a great idea, Andrea!
ReplyDeleteThanks, girl! I can hardly take credit for the idea - but they're so much fun!
DeleteSo fun! We dont have a pool, so Florida summers are HOT HOT HOT! I'm going to do this as an alternative to water balloons (without having to pick up all the little balloon pieces).
ReplyDeleteYES!!! And without having to spend $10 for the easy-fill ones every time you want to throw them!
DeleteLove this! Thanks for sharing!!!
ReplyDeleteSo glad you enjoyed it!!!
DeleteHow neat! You are such a fun mom!
ReplyDeleteHow fun! I think that may be our weekend project.
ReplyDeleteYES!!! Let me know how it goes!
DeleteI love it! I will definitely be making these for my grandchildren when they come to swim in our pool this summer! Thanks, Andrea!
ReplyDeleteSo fun! They'll love them!
DeleteYou're such a fun mom! You can tell in the pictures that the kiddos love these! :)
ReplyDeleteIt's funny because out of all the pool toys I've bought these are probably they're favorite :)
DeleteGirlfriend!! You kill me with your craftiness!! My poor kiddos 😂. You rock, mama!
ReplyDeleteYou can TOTALLY do these!!!

ReplyDeleteHave fun! :)
DeleteOh my boys (and all their friends) will LOVE this!!! Thanks for sharing!!
ReplyDeleteThat Inspired Chick
They hold a TON of water and so even if you miss your target they make quite the splash :)
DeleteHow clever!! Our kids would LOVE these!
ReplyDeleteAnd EASY!
DeleteLove this! We will definitely be making these and enjoying them all summer long! I love the crafts you do with your kids and can't wait to see all you do over the summer!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Natalie!
DeleteThis is such a good idea. I bet my little guy would love them in the bath too.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Christy! They'd be perfect for bath time!
DeleteVery cute project!! I think I'll surprise the nieces and nephews with these as a fun "Schools Out" gift...we still have 17 more school days to go!!
