Come On In - Playroom Edition

I am so excited to start showing y'all our new house!  We've been here for a month and I can say that we're 99% done getting settled in.  Wait... I just remembered the garage... so let's say 90%... or 85%. ;)

One of the first rooms that we got together after moving in was the playroom.  I wanted the kids to feel like they had a place that was settled and also wanted to be able to send them upstairs to play so I could get things done in other rooms :)  We didn't have a playroom in our old house and I love that the kids can make a big ol' mess of cars and Legos and play food and leave it for playing the next day without it being all over downstairs.

So, without further adieu, come on up!

As soon as you get to the top of the stairs you're in the loft area which is officially kid zone.

All of the furniture was from our old house and I bought this rug because I loved that it had lots of colors which would make it easy to decorate around.

We have the 8x10 and you can find it HERE.

The teepee is from E & E Teepees and I used the floor pillow from the canopy Griffin used to have in her old room.

The kids like to read and play on their Kindles in here.

The fact that the loft is open completely freaked me out when we moved in.  I told Dave I wanted estimates on bricking the whole thing over :)  hahaha

We ended up putting the couch about a foot and a half away from the half wall and we've placed things on the sides of the couch (the side table, teepee and a big toy basket) to discourage the kids from going behind it.  We talked to them about that area being off limits and they've totally complied.  And exhale :)

My original plan was to refinish the little red kitchen, but I'm actually kind of digging the red!  It's Griffin's most played with toy and I foresee this being one of those toys that we keep forever... like Legos and Thomas train tracks  ;)

Green and coral pillow - XOXO pillow - Sunshine Pillow - Giant Monkey (except yours will have two ears unless you ask Puppy Jack Bauer to come chew yours off. hahaha)

The chalkboard is actually an old window that's was made into a chalkboard and I found it on Craigslist forever ago and the felt balls I bought from Six and Grand and then I just strung them onto embroidery floss.  Easy!

Can you spot my little photo bomber?

All of the wooden word signs are from Vine and Branches.  She is local and INCREDIBLE!!!  Her work is flawless and I love mixing the black and brown.  I had all of these pieces in our old house (except for the Holy Spirit sign above the chalkboard), but only pulled them out for particular holidays/occasions, so I love getting to have them out all the time now.  The big M is from Son of Whale.  They started making letters to fund their adoption and I love having a little piece of their story in our home.  The shelf is from HomeGoods, globe is from World Market and little plant is from IKEA.  The little blue chair was a Craigslist find about 7 years ago.  It's an old schoolhouse chair and I love it!

Favorite candle - favorite picture - favorite mug :)

The boys Wii U is up here and there have been some serious Mario Kart tournaments happening this week.

I'm a sucker for bulletin boards and the kids loved picking out the pictures to hang up.  The "Maine and Back" banner is by Sass and Crafts and I picked the saying because Luke has always said that he loves us "to Maine and back" and now it's kind of our family thing.

The closet in the playroom is surprisingly huge.  It goes WAY over on both sides and we use it to hold tons of the kids games and toys.

The over the door organizer is actually a shoe organizer from Target.  It's great for card games and other smaller items.

I'll totally admit that I took these pictures on a Saturday morning before the chaos and mess started and I may have bribed the boys with fruit snacks to keep all the Legos in their room for 10 mins. hahaha

Thanks for stopping by and checking out the playroom!  Happy Wednesday, friends!

  1. So lovely and organized. What a great idea. My living room is a perpetual mess of toys. Do you happen to know what color is on the wall?

    1. It was already painted when we moved in but I can look on the paint that they left us and see if I can figure it out for you. I'll comment here later today after I have a chance to look :)

  6. I love your playroom for your kids, even better that you get to use all of your old furniture from your previous home up there, I'm sure that makes your kids feel really comfortable, having that similarity up there.

  17. Love love your new house. My family just moved and trying to figure out what I want to spend the extra money on and what can wait. What are your thoughts about hard wood floors? Or will you keep carpet? I just don't know! I have 2 little ones and a dog and feel like as many times as I clean then they never look like the day it was installed. Wanted to know your thoughts?!

    1. I would prefer hardwood throughout... but I don't mind the carpet upstairs. At some point we'll replace the carpet upstairs (probably with more carpet), but I think we'll have the stairs done in wood. We'll see :) Floors are such a BIG decision... good luck!!!

  19. Love it! It looks great!!! Maybe if the couch on the wall freaks you out, you could swap it to the wall with the tv? Not sure if there is room there for the couch or if it would be awkward walking up that way, but I thought all those cute pictures would be just as cute above the couch and then the tv would be in front of that scary wall! Have a great week!

    1. I'm fine with it now since there's no way they can reach the half wall from it and the teepee and toy basket prevent them from going behind it... we talked about putting the couch on the opposite wall, but I was afraid that it would actually provide more opportunity for them to be over by the half wall (and like pull a chair up to look over and such). We've actually talked about having it drywalled and are still in the process of exploring that option. We'll see!

    2. We had a half wall in our loft area and the kids did great with not going near it but I was just always nervous so we finally had it drywalled. It didn't cost much and I love it now! Your playroom is amazing and makes me want to go clean out our playroom and re-decorate!! Can't wait to see more rooms!

  21. I have to say Andrea....we both moved to new homes at the same time....and did about the same in the department of having to order, hire movers, painters and both got new pools to worry about. My 5 kids are all older than yours (18,16,14,10 & 9) and able to pack/unpack pretty much on their own....my issue is being able to make a choice. With a new style of home, I have become unsure if I am making the correct choice. I like reading here and watching on snap chat to give me confidence along side you! Thanks for sharing your life!

The 3 doors on the other side, are they leading into their bedrooms?

    1. Thanks so much, Bernadine! What a sweet compliment! There are four doors... three bedrooms and a bathroom. I think I'm going to show those next week. ;)

  24. OMG when I first saw the couch backed up to the half wall I totally freaked! All I could think about was somebody standing up on the couch and going overboard. I was SO relieved to see that y'all pulled it out from the wall! So smart, Momma!

Everything looks great! Your babies are going to make the best memories in there!

    1. Hahaha - it's actually much farther away than it looks (and has been since day one) - NO possibility of them even reaching the wall... we're toying with the idea of having it actually drywalled... but that's a whole other story :)

  25. So cute and cozy, just like everyone knew your new place would be! I love that it looks like the boys’ rooms are so close, and Griffin has a little distance. (Not for now, but down the line.) And I have to admit, at the beginning I panicked about the sofa and the half wall. I wouldn’t have said anything, but I should have known that you would have had it under control! And having the closet for storage is awesome. It's just the best spot.

    1. I was totally freaked out - but probably 75% of the houses we looked at had loft playrooms and/or catwalks connecting two sides of upstairs. And YES! GG has her own bathroom space and is a little farther from the boys which is why we put her in the room she's in - it worked out perfectly!

  27. I don't remember seeing it listed, but where is the Holy Spirit sign from? We sing that song at our church and it's one of my favorites!
The playroom is super cozy looking!

  28. An amazing room! And good call on keeping the area right by the ledge off limits. That would make me nervous too.

  29. Love that space!!! It is just so comfortable and it's a wonder you EVER see your kiddos throughout the day with all that great space/bedrooms upstairs! You did an amazing job!
Weird question???? Do you hang wall decor with nails in studs or Command strips???

  30. Eeekkkk!!!! LOVE...LOvE...LOVE!!! Too precious....I love every little detail!!! Perfect!!! Can't wait to see room after room☺️

  31. Love the playroom! I don't know how you've gotten so much done already. Have you looked into netting the open space behind the couch? My realtor mentioned that since I have the same fear. It would only be temporary until they're older which I like.

  32. Love the playroom!! You've done a fabulous job making such a special place for them. The rug, Pom Pom garland and monkey with one ear are my favorites!! lol!! Any suggestions on Lego storage!? My son is Lego crazy and I'm pretty sure they start multiplying as soon as they enter the house 😳😂 I find them everywhere!! No matter how much I attempt to organize, they end up in every little nook and crease throughout the house! Can't wait to see more of the house.
