FIFTEEN YEARS

Fifteen years ago today I was hauling a TON of decor and dishes, a 10 foot Christmas tree and my wedding dress downtown McKinney to set up for our wedding.  Yes, we were those people who did it ourselves, and I think that the time we spent with family and friends prepping and rehearsing for our wedding that morning was one of the best parts of the day.

It was unseasonably warm - like almost 90 degrees and sunny - and after we got everything set up and ready I remember Dave and I ran a couple of errands on the square and then went back to our house and made sandwiches for lunch just like any other day :) hahaha

That evening we gathered with a small group of our friends and family and promised each other that we'd be there forever, for always, and no matter what.

“When I look in his eyes, I don’t see perfection. I don’t see a love story that would necessarily be something people would watch on a big screen and dream about. I see someone who will fight for me and protect me and love me in spite of all the ways I am still a wreck. I see home. Wherever he is. That’s my home.”

And just for fun, I thought I'd share 15 things you may not know about "us" :)

1) We didn't have a wedding party!  It was just us!

2) When it comes to kids Dave handles the poop and I handle the puke.  We made the arrangement pretty early on in parenthood and while it may be TMI it's the truth.  Find you someone who is the poop to your puke :)

3) Dave and I met at a Black Eyed Pea restaurant - we knew each other by name but had never really talked until that night.  Mozzarella sticks and the rest is history!

4) I went to every high school dance with Dave.  We met when I was a sophomore and he was a junior.

5) I hate leftovers and Dave will eat leftovers for DAYS!  Which was really helpful when we were first married and I had no clue how to cook and I would make these huge meals and it was just the two of us.

6) The biggest argument we've ever had was over a map while driving in Calgary.  We were literally standing next to the rental car with a map spread on the hood yelling which is totally out of the norm for us.  We ended up in a farmer's field that night before actually finding our B&B (which is a place where I for sure thought we were going to be murdered but that's a story for another day).

7) We dated for 6 years, got engaged and were married 7 months later

8) My closet looks like a bomb went off in it about 97% of the time.  Dave's is pristine.  Always.

9) When Dave and I had talked about getting engaged and I was dropping hints about what kinds of rings I liked I said a colored triangular-shaped diamond.  WHAT?!?!  I'm SOOOO glad Dave chose something a lot more classic!

10) Dave's first job was at his aunt and uncle's tanning salon (hello 2000!) and I used to make sandwiches or pick up food and bring it up there to eat with him and work on homework.

11) Neither one of us drink coffee.

12) One time in high school I got my hair cut and REALLY hated it.  We had talked on the phone and I had told him how much I hated it and when I saw him later that day he goes, "OH!  It's not bad AT ALL!  It's poofy!"  I burst into tears and have never let him live that down.  hahaha
He knows now to NEVER use "poofy" as a compliment :)

13) We never go to bed without the other person.  If I'm up working Dave hangs on the couch until I'm ready to go to bed.  If Dave's out or doing something I do the same.

14) We 1000% would both pick a night at home over a night out.

15) It was 88 degrees on our wedding day and 5 days later when we were in Jamaica Dallas made the news for record low temperatures and snow!

HAPPY Thursday, friends and HAPPY ANNIVERSARY to my very best friend!

  1. HAPPY ANNIVERSARY!! What a fabulous post about you guys! Only you would be so calm, cool, collected, and TOGETHER you could go home and have lunch. I'm positive I was like a chicken with my head cut off around lunch time.

  6. Happy anniversary! I love your pictures, y'all were babies! My husband and I also met in high school (our senior year) and went to prom together. I love being able to say I married my high school sweetheart. We got engaged one year later, when we were 18 and we married at 19! We are both 43 now, 44 this month, and have been married just a little over 24 years. Our anniversary was October 4. We started our family young, too...I had my first son at 21, my second son at 22 and my third and fourth sons (twins!) at 25...so we've been "done" forever and now are considered young parents to have kids as old as they are. Now they're 21, 20 and 17. It's fun to relive the moments. Y'all have a great time celebrating!

  7. Love this whole thing. There is something very special about "growing up" with your husband. Marriage is special regardless, but man - my husband knows too much. :) Happy Anniversary! We celebrated 19 years 12/1.

  16. Happy Anniversary! This is great! I have a similar hair story. Hubby and I had only been married about 9 months and I got a new very trendy haircut that I hated. Like you, I called him and warned him that it was bad. I got home, he looked at me, made a weird face and said “it’s not horrendous.” And exactly like you, I cried and ran to the bathroom. We laugh about it now, and he says “it’s not horrendous” every time I get a haircut. Haha
