Artist-Inspired Playroom Art

The art in our playroom was looking a little tired so the kids worked on some "artist-inspired" projects this week that turned out SO CUTE!!!

Mason was up first and he created his own Morris Louis-inspired painting by putting drops of acrylic paint at the top of a piece of paper, then turning it upright and spraying it with water creating the color "streaks".

  

If you do this project make sure you put a tray or something under it because you'll have a ton of paint water drip off.

We set Mason's out in the sun to dry and think it looks SO COOL framed.

Griffin was next and she painted a Georgia O'Keeffe-inspired watercolor flower.

First she drew her flower using a gray crayon (she needed to be able to see the outline but we didn't want it too dark) and then got to work with her watercolors.  She made the flower large on the paper and then picked a contrasting color for the background to really make it pop and be reminiscent of O'Keeffe's work

She used her regular crayola palette as well as liquid watercolors and it turned out so pretty.  She loved doing this project so much she wants to make more flowers next week to put in the frames over her bed!

For Luke's project we took inspiration from Alma Thomas's beautiful abstract pieces.  She was the first African American woman to have a solo exhibition at the Whitney Museum in New York and I knew her almost-pointillism style would be right up Luke's alley. He started by picking his colors (he ended up adding a few more in) and picking out flat brushes in various sizes...

Then he made lines of various size brush strokes until the paper was full.

I absolutely ADORE his final product!
