Red, White and Cute

When I was a kid we used to spend a LOT of time at my grandparent's cottage in the summer.  We did a lot of swimming, boating, reading and crafting and seed beads on safety pins was one of our go-tos.  I was so excited to show this idea to my kids and we all had a blast making these little patriotic pins to go on backpacks, jackets, etc.

You'll need red, white and blue seed beads (I used 8/10 size), safety pins (size 2) and then a few quilters size safety pins.

I put the beads in a ceramic paint palette for easy threading.  Each flag is 12 safety pins... 7 that are red and white (start and end with red, 13 beads total) and then 6 that are 5 blue followed by 8 red and white (this time you're starting with white and ending with red)

Here's what the blue, red and white pins should look like...

... and then the red and white.

When you've made all the pins, open the large quilters pin and use something to wedge open the "corner" a bit to thread the 12 pins onto the "non pointy" side.  (I realize that was not technical AT ALL so I'll show a video on my IG today!)

All three of my kids really enjoyed this craft and they've started making more for their friends and have been figuring out what other patterns/designs they can make as well.

This seriously brought me straight back to my childhood and I loved every minute of it!

We also made some special treat hangers to deliver to friends this week.  The Fourth isn't going to be the same this year but we're planning on making it fun and special and are going to kick it off this week by delivering these...

We took Chinet paper plates and cut them in half and then the kids painted them (they used  these as design inspiration)

They painted them and then we stapled them together, punched a hole on either side and filled them with some fun, patriotic treats.

I mean - nothing says Happy Fourth like a door hanger full of twinkies, right? :)

So excited to deliver these this week!

  2. I loved your look back of patriotic crafts from years past because we have made so many per your suggestion. We did the fireworks painting, the Uncle Sam mask and the Handprint flag which is one of my all-time favorite crafts as well! It's now hanging in our playroom and makes me so happy each time I look at it. Thanks for sharing such great ideas through the years xo

  3. I am 43 years old and I LOVED making and giving those away when I was young. I loved receiving them, too and often would attach them to the threads on my white Keds. I loved friendship bracelets as well...you're such a great mom! I love all your craft ideas. I wish you'd been around with your blog when my sons were little...these days they're 21, 20 and twins that are 17. I will share this with other young moms, though. Have a great week!

  4. Fun! I remember doing those beaded safety pins. I think I remember us putting them on our shoes! I hadn't thought of that in many years. :)
