Harry Potter Birthday Dinner

So last week I had a pity party about all three of my kids birthday parties being cancelled, them missing celebrating at school with their friends and postponing our annual family fiesta indefinitely - then I decided to suck it up, make the most of the extra time and make the kids birthdays memorable in their own way.

I immediately knew that I wanted to do something Harry Potter-themed for Luke and so I hit Pinterest HARD for food ideas and then just kind of ran with it from there.  I added a few items to our weekly grocery list and started to plan things out in my head.

It was even better than I had thought and Mason, Griffin and I  (particularly Mason) had so much fun pulling it together for him and making it really special.  It's for sure a birthday none of us will ever forget.

I used lots of Luke's favorite foods to create a spread right out of Hogwarts :)

I created the menu in Photoshop, printed out five copies and then gave Mason the task of tea staining them.   He let them dry in the sun for an hour or so and then he went back out and tore the edges to make them look like they had been "ripped from a book" according to him :)

The circles are just PB&J's (Luke's absolute FAVE) that I used  this sealer to make "uncrustables" out of.  My favorite were the "raven claws" (bugles)...

I printed these wings out, Mason cut them for me and then I just hot glued them to the gold and brown wrapper.

Look at him cutting :) hahaha

Luke could eat hummus (aka polyjuice potion) at every meal...

Luke had the Harry Potter and Hermoine figurines and Griffin insisted that we use them.  I love it!

Bertie Bott's every-flavored beans...

... quidditch brooms...

... what I dubbed "magic cheese" hahaha

"Slytherin Snakes"...

"Chocolate butter beer" (it's just chocolate milk) :)...

The pretzel sticks were whomping willow branches, cheeto puffs were Huffle Puffs, deviled eggs were deviled dragon eggs and the veggies were selections from Professor Sprouts vegetable garden.

The only thing I ordered for the party were the cupcake toppers and edible stars...

... the toppers were WAY cuter than I thought and I feel like the edible stars were the perfect special touch.  Luke requested red velvet cupcakes with cream cheese frosting and I was happy to deliver.

The Hedwig cookie jar I got from Luke's room :) and if you're interested in the cupcake recipe I added a highlight sharing it on my Instagram page.

The other special touch I added were  the flameless votives.  I've had them for maybe a year, they flicker and the batteries have lasted a long time.  I put some on the board...

... and then hung some from the light fixture using clear stretchy cord (what you use to make bracelets... I had it in my craft closet from leftover projects but you can also pick it up at Hobby Lobby or Michaels).

Mason and Griffin were VERY INTO this whole thing and they brought down Luke's Halloween costume robe and hung it on his chair :)  They asked him to put on his Harry Potter costume, each put on Harry Potter attire...

... put out the sorting hat...

... made signs...

... and were SO EXCITED to bring Luke down and show him.

My favorite part was his face when he saw it and then watching him go through the menu and guess what everything was ;)

Look at those proud faces!

Y'all.  I can't begin to tell you how much JOY this day brought me.  Celebrating Luke, Mason and G being so excited, getting to be CREATIVE, seriously all of it.  Good for all of us.

I hope that this is a birthday that Luke remembers for years and years because MAGIC.

Happy Thursday, friends!
