First Swim

When we were looking for a house a pool wasn't on my list... but we loved the house so much we decided to work with the pool and now that we're in we're excited about it!

The kids BEGGED us to go in on Sunday night after dinner and we were happy to oblige.  The water was chilly so we didn't think any of them would actually get in, but boy were we wrong!!!

It's no secret that I love little girl clothes - and little girl bathing suits are at the top of that list!  So stinkin' precious!!!

While we were moving in on Saturday morning, Griffin went to Kids Club at the country club and one of the sweet girls there braided her hair.  I REALLY need some lessons from them because the little braids stayed in all day Saturday, Saturday night, Sunday during naptime and still looked this cute Sunday night!  They were in pigtails that started to look sloppy so I just pulled it up into a little bun.  She swam in them and they STILL were looking great.  Seriously, I need lessons!

I can't even with the little boy leg swimsuit!!!

We hadn't cleaned or skimmed the pool yet, but apparently none of our little people cared too much ;)

Dave is OBSESSED with the blue tile (he loves all things blue), but I think at some point they'll be replaced with something a little more natural/neutral.

Boys and their toys, right?  I think they lost both of the arrows within about 90 seconds :)

We hadn't planned on them going in the pool so we didn't heat the spa, but regardless that's where they all wanted to hang out :)

Just thinking about all the swimming that's going to happen in this pool over the years makes me smile!  And I love that we have their very FIRST swim here commemorated with these great group pictures (insert sarcastic tone here). hahaha

And it wouldn't be an after dinner swim without an after dinner treat, right? :)

I tend to be super nervous with my kids around water (I'm the mom that brings a babysitter to the pool with me because I simply don't have enough eyes to watch all of them and the mom who shows up during the swim time at sports came because one camp counselor to 10 little boys doesn't seem like good odds).  I try not to be paranoid... but I'm also not willing to risk my kids safety around the water.

That said, when we fell in love with this house and it had a pool I immediately started researching pool fencing and netting.  I've always had an "open door policy" in the afternoons with the kids running in and out playing in the backyard and since this house has such a great yard I wanted to be able to do the same thing here without worrying about them around the water.  We installed one of those crazy loud pool door alarms on the door going out to the patio - but that doesn't help me being able to let them play out back by themselves.

We've decided to go with a traditional pool fence and (thankfully!) it's being installed this Friday.  THANK GOODNESS for peace of mind!  I'll keep y'all posted on what it looks like and on how we like it!

Happy (almost) Summer, Friends!!!

  5. Cute cute pictures!! I'm the exact same ab the pool. In fact I'm already stressing about my 2.5 year old this summer. He's in that "I'm not going to listen even though I know what your saying" stage. The pool fence will give you lots of peace of mind!

  7. Your kids are at great ages for a pool. It is a great way for them to burn off their energy. Very smart idea on the pool fence. They aren't the prettiest things but are a must. Sadly, before you know it, they will be big and safe enough and the fence can come down.

  9. Sooo exciting! I bet they are going to absolutely love having the pool there in summer. Here in Australia the law requires all pools to have a permanent fence around them, so well done on getting one installed ASAP!!! You can never be too careful around water!

  10. My kids have been in swimming lessons since they were 6 months and are great swimmers! They are now 3 1/2 & almost 2. They're totally safe in the water but I wouldn't want them hanging out by a pool alone! So I get it!

  11. I lol at the showing up during pool time because of the 10 to 1 ratio! I took a vacation day last week from work to chaperone my son's beach field trip because I'm paranoid with water too. The Northern CA beaches can be crazy. Safety first!

  15. OH man pools, we have one too and my kids LOVE going in it...currently our pool is about 70° no problem, jump right in, crazy people! I always told Mr. that I wanted to be the house with the pool so all of my kids friends would want to come to our house to play, that way I get to keep an eye on my kids, I can see what they are doing and I might be adding in some homemade treats just to make sure to seal the deal of being the go to house :)

  16. Hey Andrea. So Griffin in her swimsuit- Oh My Goodness at the sweetness!! Too cute! & that braid and top knot.... Adorable. Oh so here in Australia it is the law that you must have your pool fenced and I think that is a good thing. Safety over pretty any day I reckon. They will love having a pool. Oh, I joined snapchat last night. Not really sure what I'm doing but I worked out how to do the filters on the photos so that's fun and silly. Ha! I found you and watched your snaps from yesterday. I love hearing your voice, so cool. Not sure how to comment/interact on there yet so just wanted to let you know I am enjoying what your posting on there.

  17. I am a paranoid mom when it comes to my kids and pools. We just moved back to Florida from Oklahoma where my kids swam 3 or 4 times the entire 4 years we lived there. The splash pad was my favorite option for warm summer days.

That being said my kids will start ISR lessons in July. ISR teaches them to immediately roll over to their backs when they hit the water and to float. We have friends whose son's life was saved when he fell in before his mom could reach him. They are expensive and a huge time commitment (think 5 days a week, 10 minutes each lesson for 6 weeks) but I feel like the investment in these lessons is well worth it.

  18. We bought our house last October and it had a very large pool. We actually wanted a house with a pool (my husband is a former college swimmer), and instantly fell in love with the house and the pool. But, having a fearless 3 1/2 year old, I told my husband she wasn't allowed to come to the new house until a pool fence was installed. I didn't care if it cost an arm and a leg....you can't put a price on safety and piece of mind! Enjoy your pool! So many wonderful memories will be made by it this summer!!

  19. We moved from the Midwest to California a couple years ago. We bought a house with a pool. The fence was installed two minutes after we signed the paperwork. Safety is so important. We also installed one of those loud alarms. Things can happen so fast!!!
