Weekend Wrap-Up: Locks of Love Edition

This weekend got off to a delicious start on Friday night when we dug into the "Smooth Operator" pie that Leann had dropped off the night before.  It's hard to describe the Smooth Operator.... it's a chocolate silk pie with a pretzel crust and it's pretty much divine.  The boys each had a little piece and when my dad stopped by to say goodnight on his way home he had a piece as well.  I was putting laundry into the dryer when the doorbell rang and when I went to answer the door Mason met me with chocolate all over his face...

Ruh-Roh.
He told me, "I MIGHT have seen a stranger eat it".  Sure ya did, kid.

We forgave and forgot and moved on to movie night with Jack Bauer.

I think he thoroughly enjoyed our screening of Penguins of Madagascar :)

Saturday morning started bright and early with Captain America in me bed (never thought I'd say that!). hahaha

The cape got passed around all morning as we read lots of stories...

... and played lots of Legos.  Perfect Saturday morning!

Dave dropped Luke off at Aiden's Lego Ninjago jumpy birthday party and Sheaffer texted me this pic of our little ninjas.  When it came through I laughed so hard!  These two have been buddies since birth and they play so well together!  Little goofballs :)

Luke went to play at Sheaffers and I put G down for a nap while Mason watched a movie and I said a fond farewell to my HOT MESS of hair.  Y'all.... I RARELY wore it all the way down and when I did I always straightened (or curled!) the junk out of it so it looked somewhat manageable... but here it is in all it's horse mane-like glory. hahaha

So, here's the back story.  My hair has been pretty much every length imaginable.  From REALLY short (this is from after our wedding and then when I was pregnant with Luke) to the craziness it was this past weekend.

During college I heard about Locks of Love, grew my hair out and then cut it all right after graduating.  Yes.... the girl in the pics below is a college graduate... not eleven :)

Right after Griffin was born, I had several inches taken off in my last significant haircut.

Since then I've had trims, but nothing major.  Locks of Love has always been an organization close to my heart and while my hair grew out like crazy I knew that my "end game" would be to cut it and donate it again.  And I'll totally admit that I really liked having it long because it was SO SO SO easy!  I could shower, throw it up, walk out the door and look somewhat okay :)  As soon as I found out about Manda's cancer in the Fall, I knew it was time to cut it, and decided that after the Holiday craziness I'd take the plunge.

I made an appointment at a super cute salon on the McKinney square and didn't look back.  It sounds so stupid, but once you have long hair it can be hard to let go of it. hahaha  You know how long it takes to grow (although mine grows pretty fast) and know that it will be YEARS before it's back.  In the grand scheme of things, though, it was such an easy decision.  Knowing that the hair I donated would help provide a wig for someone who couldn't afford one otherwise is an amazing feeling.

One last "long hair pic" before the chop!  I told the stylist to take off as much as she wanted...

.... and ended up with 14" long ponies!  The minimum requirement is 10", but Amelia thought that it would look cute shorter so we went for it :)

My first after pic :)  I can admit now that I was pretty much in shock. hahaha

Of course, what's a girl to do when she gets out to her car???  Text all her girlfriends and ask opinions. :)

I picked Luke up from Sheaffer's and headed home.  In the car on the way home Luke goes, "I thought you were getting a haircut???" :)  The kid can tell if 2 Lego pieces are missing off of a "creation".... I cut off over a foot of hair and he doesn't notice.  Awesome.  Who did notice???  Griffin :)  She kept touching it and smiling.  LOVE HER!

I have been so blessed by this experience and would REALLY encourage any of y'all who are on the fence to take the plunge and chop it off!  Your hair can't have highlights in it (it has to be completely grown out) and it has to be 10", but other than that they can use all kinds of hair!  As of right now, my plans are to maintain my shorter hair... but who knows.... I may do it again ASAP!  We'll just have to see :)

We had no sooner walked in the door, then Luke got picked up by ANOTHER friend for ANOTHER playdate.  It was a big day for Luke :)  Pretty much the best day ever.

Turkey meatballs for the kids and a salad for me...

... and this is pretty much what the rest of the night looked like :)

Saturday was a super busy day for Dave and he went in to work pretty early... so my mom came down and watched the littles for me while I got my hair cut.  When I got home she had done this!  OMG!!! Best. Mom. Ever. :)

Sunday morning we did church like normal and it was Shay and my week to teach in our three year old class.  Shay and I have taught this same age group since before we had kids.  We teach every other week and have the best time.  We've had a TON of laughs, a handful of meltdowns (kids, not us!) and could we tell you some poop stories :)  All of our newborn babies have joined us a time or two (because they were either too young to get dropped off or were screaming.... or both) and it was super special that Ashby got to join us this week!  At the end of the service, Griffin joined our class and she and Ashby got to play :)  I hope these girls are besties for YEARS to come!!!

There is a WHOLE lot of sass and spunk in these pics!!!

Ashby was totally confused (again), by Griffin's shenanigans.  Hopefully G will make a better third impression :)

After church I wanted to attempt my #sundaymorningainteasy pic and all was going well until Mason came out of the garage with the dang scooter...

She's been working on her pout :)

And about 4 seconds later.... sweet as pie...

As Mason got closer she turned stoic...

,,, and then this..

Sharing is HARD!!! Especially when you're the baby and your big brothers typically let you have what you want :)

Mason took a turn, Griffin got stripped down, and then she took a second spin.  Shirtless. hahaha

Still getting used to the new do.  So... selfie.
(hahahaha - apparently I'm 14)

Sunday I had an event at school all afternoon, then I ran a few kid-free errands and I came home to a little girl in disguise...

I think she favors me.... minus the boogers :)
We spent the rest of Sunday night getting organized for the week and sneaking in some last minute weekend snuggles.  Monday always comes WAY too fast!

So, longest weekend wrap-up ever! hahaha  Hopefully you stuck around for all of it because the winner of the bracelets from yesterday is............
ADDIE HICKS!!!

I was totally "techie" about it and had Dave scroll up and down the comments page while I closed my eyes and pointed. hahaha  Addie, send me an email to dave-and-andrea@hotmail.com so I can get your address and pop them in the mail to you!

Happy Tuesday, friends!!!

  11. I love your hair. I'm 32 and I've been growing my hair out and donating it since I was 19. I had long hair at 19 and did the big chop at that time just because I wanted shorter hair, but I couldn't donate it at that time because I had been highlighting my hair. Note that it's the bleach in the highlighting process that makes the hair unusable, you can dye your hair and even use very subtle highlights so long as you don't use actual bleach in the process - just make sure your hair stylist knows that - sorry for the quick PSA. After I saw all that hair that wasn't donatable I decided that I was going to take care of my hair and act as if it's on loan and not really my own. Its just a really simple way for me to do something nice for someone else. I grow my hair out, donate it and start over again - it usually takes me about 3-4 years to grow it all out for another donation. And I just have to say that I made my most recent donation of 18 inches back in August (my 3rd donation since I decided to start doing this at 19) and I have to say that I started reading your blog in September and your hair really made me miss my hair! I totally get what you're saying about it being hard to let go, not to mention longer hair is so much easier! I feel like my 'at the shoulders' cut that I have right now is so much more work! I feel like I'm just waiting it out until it's another 3 inches longer and easier to deal with. By the way I love that Griffin was the one who noticed.

Oh, and I seriously identified with the Griffin on the scooter pictures. My youngest is 20 months old and btw...has a head full of crazy girl hair just like Griffin's only blonde so I identify with that - girlfriend always looks like she just got out of bed! #iswearijustbrushedit Anyway she is having the hardest time sharing. She's going through a pretty big 'mine' phase and my oldest is just trying to deal with it right now. Like my youngest attempts to claim her older sister's room and all it's contents daily! Hopefully it stops soon because the struggle IS real!

  12. Love this post. Of course only a girl would notice your great new haircut right away! And just think you can sleep in a bit more -less hair to style!

  13. I love your hair!!! A couple of years ago I grew mine out for LoL because I knew the time to start coloring it was drawing nigh (eek) and I had always wanted to donate my hair. When the certificate comes in the mail, you will cry for sure ; ) Have a great week!

  16. Love the hair! My daughter donated to locks of love years ago. She was 13. So proud she did that! Can I stop by for a piece of that scrumptious looking pie? Oh my word! YUM! and the pics of Griffin and the scooter? HAHA Priceless! She is certainly a doll baby girl!

  18. I have always had long hair and have donated before. I totally understand the attachment we get to our hair. The new cut looks so good!

  19. I love Locks of Love and have donated to them three times. http://foxysdomesticside.blogspot.com/2012/10/fun-facts-friday.html. Although when I cut my hair I always seem to go chin length, I like the dramatic affect it has on people when I walk into work with chin length hair. Although the older I get the harder it is to grow out. I used to be able to do cut it every 2 years or so, now it's turning into 3-4 years and I just get impatient. I love my short hair, but it's such a hassle to actually have to do it every morning as opposed to just brushing and going. You're hair looks great! So happy you could donate all that gorgeous hair!

  20. LOVING your hair! Looks great!:) And Mason and the pie? Classic:)

  21. LOVE your hair! SO cute and what a great cause for donating. My daughter donated her hair when she was in the 2nd grade. :)

  22. LOVE that you donated your hair! I've donated mine after I had each of the kiddos so three times for me too! It's long enough to do again and you are so right! It's hard letting go of all that hair! But, it's for a great cause and I'm sure I'll do it soon! And, your hair looks amazing!

  23. We were able to donate Gretchen's hair when she was just 3 years old! We donated to the Pantene program since they're a little less picky about the hair they receive and you can donate just 8 inches rather than the length that Locks of Love requires. I blogged about it here: http://www.honeypieaccessories.blogspot.com/2012/11/g-donates-her-hair.html
We are hoping to donate again but it is taking forever to grow back out!

  24. I think Mason with the pie is hilarious! Oh and I'd like to request that Shay make a version of the Smooth Operator Pie! Listen, I live in Michigan and there's no way I can haul my cookies to Texas just for that pie, but I'm drooling looking at it. Please, please convince your friend to come up with a recipe for a knock off!

  25. Mason!!!!!! He is such a hoot with his "I think I saw a stranger eat it" comment. Ha!!! :) Your hair looks awesome and so wonderful that you were able to donate it!!!! Love it.

  30. I bet it feels so weird washing your hair now. And I'm sure your head is 10 pounds lighter...such a good feeling. This post made me laugh throughout with all your comments.

  31. Oh and where can I get that pie? Did she make it or buy it? I'm about to eat the computer screen!

  32. Love that you donated your hair. I have done it once before and have been thinking about it again but with a almost 2 year old long hair seems easier. Throw it up and go! And my Mom came over to watch my son on a snow day and did all of my laundry too. Mom's are the best!

  33. Your hair looks adorable! Been debating cutting my hair as well, turned 50 and everyone is telling me its time. It's about the length of yours after G was born.

  34. loooove the haircut!!! & I'm exhausted just reading about your weekend!!!!

  35. I love that you chopped off all your hair! I've donated my hair the last two years as well. This year instead of Locks of Love, I donated to Pantene. I heard some controversial things about Locks of Love lately.

Finally a picture of GG and Ashby together, LOVE IT!!!

  36. I love your hair, too! Can you tell me where you got the blue bins hanging next to the bed that says "Library Books"? Been looking for something like that for my boys! Thanks!

  37. Your hair looks awesome! Even after cutting off so much, it is still pretty long!

  38. I love your hair. It's very flattering on you. You're sweet to give it to Looks of Love. I didn't know they wouldn't take highlighted hair. I love how you're keeping it real with the pictures of Griffin on the scooter.

  39. Andrea, I have been reading for awhile but this is my first time commenting. I had to tell you that your hair looks great! You are adorable with any hair length but I think the new hair cut is especially flattering. It brings out your eyes. So pretty! Also, it's such a treat to read about your adorable family. My kids are much older and I miss those (crazy) days. Thank you!

  40. I thought I commented but I'm not sure if it went through. So sorry if this is a repeat!
Isn't having a girl after 2 boys so special! I love all the differences. I have a 2 1/2 yr old girl after 2 boys and recently she started gasping. Typically it's after one of her brothers takes something from her or does something to upset her. She'll gasp and then look at my husband or I to make sure we're watching and then cry or scream on the floor. :)

  41. Yah. My hair is very long and can be cut be I want it a certainty length and it's not long enough. I don't want to let it go :.( . A couple months ago, I don't know why I allowed her to, but my 18 year old sister, who has NO experience in hair cutting, I let her cut off4 inches. She was actually really good at it and got the dead ends off~ never want those.

  42. It's a wonderful feeling to know you're blessed enough to be in a position to donate your hair to someone less fortunate. I have donated my hair twice to Children With Hair Loss. They will take any hair (at least 8", color treated, grey, etc) as long as it's in good condition. #cutpasslove http://www.childrenwithhairloss.us/donate-your-hair/
