House Game - Pencil Balance Race

I’m in charge of student activities for our Middle School which includes being over our House program and weekly House games. I share little snippets on Instagram and get asked often for game details and I’ve started/stopped a big “House System” post at least 7 times but always get overwhelmed and stop.  I’ve decided to simplify things and just share House Game as we play them and as they work well and then I’ll just continue to link those posts at the end of the games posts so that they’re l kind of in one place.

This week’s game was one of my FAVORITES because it was virtually no prep, was easy to explain, and involved a good number of kids. I hae 150+ kids and so games that only involve 4 kids (one from each house) can be hard because it’s hard to keep the other 146 engaged.

For this game kids were in four groups of 5 and they formed a circle and then balanced unsharpened pencils between their pointer fingers. One member of each team had to have their foot on the blue line and then, as a group, they had to move across the gym until one member of their team had a foot in the opposite blue section and then they had to head back until one member had their foot back in the blue.

If they dropped a pencil at any point or were caught using extra fingers to help balance their pencils they had to go back to the beginning and restart.

Our middle school is divided up into four houses and we did three rounds - a round of just 6th graders, a round of just 7th graders and then a round with 8th grade.  I was able to have 60 kids participate and they really loved this game. Our red house won two rounds and blue won the third and I awarded points for the House that won each round.

THANK YOU for being patient with me in sharing these - but I promise to post a few a month until I’m current on what games have worked for us!

HAPPY Thursday, friends!

  1. Thank you for sharing these! I'm also in charge of these games for our teams at our middle school. It's hard coming up with ideas! One of our students' favorites is the roller chair race. The team teacher (or a student for those too afraid!) sits in an office chair and another student pushes the chair across the gym in back. It's slightly terrifying but has gone well. The other is carpet square relay. Students shuffle across the gym on upside down carpet squares under their feet. I'm looking forward to trying the ones you've posted!
