Lego Storage Update

Luke has been a Lego fan since, I believe, his 4th birthday.  While I thought some of his interest may wane over the years instead it's actually grown and now he's very much into collecting these super large and super detailed sets.  The dilemma???  WHERE TO PUT THEM ALL!!!  Over Christmas break we decided just to pull the trigger on what we consider the mother of all Lego storage systems and it has been the best decision EVER for Luke's room.

Ironically, the paragraph above is copied directly from a post I wrote in February of 2022 when I thought all of our Lego problems were solved forever.  How wrong I was. hahahaha

Here's what we did back in 2022...

... and we chose the shelves because they were 2 feet deep and he needed something deep to accommodate some of those super huge sets.  Well... two years later he needed more linear feet of shelving (but not as much depth) so we started measuring and re-evaluating things.  You can read my 2022 post HERE which details the shelves we put in his room then as well as all of the other storage options we'd used as he "grew" his Lego collection.

So here's what we did this time.  Along this wall he has three Billy bookcases from IKEA....

... they're not as deep as the "garage shelving" we had before but provide him with a TON of linear space to store his sets.

Then along the wall that used to have some wall shelves and a desk he added two PAX wardrobe units (one 29" wide and one 39" wide).  We discovered these after watching a BUNCH of Lego storage/display videos on Youtube and they're GREAT!  These provide the depth he needs for some of the larger sets...

... and they fit perfectly on the wall that used to house his desk.

We got rid of his large red nightstand things and instead he got one of the smaller Billy bookcases for these cars...

... and we replaced the nightstands with these which are way nicer than anticipated and the perfect size.

They came unassembled but they have a drawer and outlets and are super sturdy.

I REALLY feel like this is the end of the lego storage solutions at our house... I'm not sure he could get another shelf in here and I really don't think there would be a better option for what he needs.

So there you have it, friends!  I hope this has provided a bit of insight and maybe a little inspiration if you have a Lego collector at your house.

HAPPY Tuesday!

  1. Yesss, thanks for the ideas!! My 13 year old has so many large sets to display too. I just don't think we can get enough shelving with his dresser, bed, and nightstand. Pretty soon these boys will be sleeping standing up, lol.

  2. Thanks for sharing this! I copied your garage shelf idea for my 9 year old Lego enthusiast but we are running out of room so I might copy this too, lol.

  3. My boys love LEGOs too. Has Luke seen Lego Masters? We love to watch it as a family. It's such a fun show! Also, those IKEA Billy Bookcases are the best things ever. :)

  4. We always struggle with lego storage and this seems like a great solution. However, my question is what will he do without the desk? Just use the laptop in another area of the house? Homework/study desks in my kids room feel like a necessity.

  5. 2 thoughts after "wow! Great job!"
1-dusting is going to suck eggs in a serious way, can you install glass doors?
2- making his bed a platform bed with 2 rows of drawers gives him massive additional storage space.
    Nice job
