Teacher Tuesday - folder system

Not that long ago I shared a picture of my school bag with my grading folders in it and had several inquiries about what the folders were and how I used them.

I teach 6 classes and each class has 3 folders in one hanging file.  One for "to be graded", one for "makeup work" and one for "to be returned".  Essentially, when I collect papers from a class I immediately put them in alphabetical order and enter either "pending" or "missing" into my online gradebook so kids/parents know whether or not the paper has been turned in (pending just means that I have it, but it isn't graded) and then put the sorted papers into that class's "to be graded" folder.

If I have a student who is absent that day, I put their copy of the notes we took and the homework I assigned into the "makeup work" folder.

After I've graded a set of papers and entered the grades I'll move that stack to the "to be returned" folder.

I teach six classes and have at least one assignment daily so this helps me stay organized AND keep up with makeup work (which is my achilles heel).  At the end of the day I'll typically pull out the "to be graded" folders and bring the home with me if I'm going to wrap up grading that night and then leave those papers in that folder until I get to school the next day, enter the grades, and move the papers over to the "to be returned" folder.

I found this set of folders back in 2020 and they've held up BEAUTIFULLY!  They were perfect for me because I teach six classes and each color had 3 folders and honestly - the only part that shows any wear is the sharpie fading where I wrote on the tabs.  Considering I use these daily and haul them all over the place I think that's pretty dang impressive.

Here's to tackling one of the hardest parts of being a middle school teacher - the organization of 100+ kids papers ;) hahaha.

Hoping you found a tip or two that helps you out in your own classroom!  HAPPY TUESDAY, friends!!!
