Just Luke Day

Dave has been working a TON lately, so when he mentioned that he had Tuesday off, our first thought was to grab all the kids and do something fun as a family.  But then it hit us... Just Luke Day!

The little kids are finishing the week up at Miss Lisa's and the timing was perfect so we surprised our big boy with a day all to himself.  Luke is the sweetest, kindest, most patient big brother and he shares EVERYTHING about 99% of the time.  A room, his toys, our attention.  Everything.

We dropped Mason and Griffin off at Miss Lisa's house and then we told Luke that we had a special day planned JUST for him.  He begged and attempted to negotiate his way into finding out what we had up our sleeves, but to no avail.

We pulled into Stonebriar (a local mall) and Luke assumed we were going to see a movie or the Lego store and then as soon as we walked in he spotted this...

The Lego Americana Roadshow is on display at our local mall and he was in Lego Heaven!

Ten large-scale models of US landmarks were scattered throughout the mall and he got a map with questions to answer and had the BEST time!  Dave loves US History and he and Luke were in their element talking about the buildings and reading facts about the construction of the models. I loved getting to watch them do their thing.

There were lots of smaller displays as well which I think he loved even more because of all the funny little scenes and details.

So at what point did he get almost as tall as my shoulder?!?!?!?!

This car was filled with Legos and you had to guess how many were inside.  He guessed 19,000, which cracked me up. :)

There was a play area set up where kids got to build with thousands of pieces and construct cars to race down the ramps.  It was awesome that we were with just him because he didn't have to rush for Griffin or wait for Mason or anything.  He LOVED it!

We raced annnnnnnnnnd........

Surprise! Surprise!  He smoked me! ;)

His awesome vehicle.

We ran into one of his friends from school and his soccer team and they were so cute discussing Legos together.

He decided today that he officially wants to be a Lego designer/builder when he grows up.  We can't wait! :)

We had the best time taking these :)

After we saw all the landmarks we headed to the Lego store where Dave and I surprised him with getting to pick out a new set. He's really into the Technic sets now (they have gears and pistons and do all kinds of crazy things) and he was out of his mind excited.

A quick lunch at Cheesecake Factory was just what we needed after a morning of Lego-looking.

Yes ma'am!

We had THE GREATEST day with just Luke.  It was at his and ONLY his pace and both Dave and I could tell how special he felt.

Lots of days I don't feel like I had a winning day.  I may have said no more than I should have, or I forgot to make them brush their teeth before bed (mom, I didn't just write that - they ALWAYS brush their teeth before bed! hahaha) or I wonder if I was "enough"... but Just Luke Day was a WIN! The little sparkle in his eye and extra long hug before bed told me that it was a win.  It also convicted me about the amount of one-on-one time that I spend with each of my kids and we've put a few more "Just You" days on the calendar.

Happy Thursday, friends!!! I hope it's a WIN :)

    1. We try to give everyone lots of special, undivided attention at home (reading time, playing a game, etc.), but there was something extra special about being on a fun outing with both parents and JUST him.

  14. I laughed when I saw your first picture of Luke because when I commented on IG about my Parker having the same shirt on that day, I didn't even see his shorts. P was wearing those SAME shorts and shirt on the exact same day. Apparently we have very similar tastes : )
Your Luke Day looked so fun!!! I'm sure he had a ball and y'all made memories you will treasure for a long time.

  18. What a fun day! I know Luke will never forget it for sure. I do the same Just Me days with my grandsons occasionally and it is so fun to do just what they want when they want to. Like your kids they share and play well together but we all want to be pampered some days and it feels good to be able to do that. Glad you had such a great day, the Legos look amazing!I would say this was a WIN!

  22. This post made me tear up, he just looked so happy! It blessed my heart that you felt like it was a WIN, that is precious. Side note, Stonebriar is the mall I go where I live, and on Monday as you can imagine it was jammed pack...good job on going Tuesday! Lastly, what is the name of that pasta dish you ordered at he Cheesecake Factory? Looks divine!

    1. Thanks, Chastity! We figured it would be packed on Monday with the holiday and all the rain. I'll have to ask Dave later if he remembers the name... garlic chicken maybe? It has peas and pancetta and was completely unhealthy if that narrows it down next time you're there :)

  26. Is it goofy that I teared up reading your post? The more kids you have, the more you realize how special that one on one time is! You can tell from Luke's eyes that this was the.best.day.eva! Great job, mom!

  27. Your post really made me tear up! We only have one kid so you would think that most days are THEIR days, but sadly it's not always the case. Work and daycare and family time aren't always what THEY want to do. Thank you for reminding me to make time for my kid and give her a special day. You're an awesome mom Andrea!!

    1. Yes, yes, yes! totally agree with you on this...after working all day, it's hard to set aside time to do what your one kiddo wants to do! But this was a great reminder to just DO IT sometimes. :)

    2. Agree with both of you! It's not always just the time involved, but really finding something that they want to do. :)

  29. I love this. One on one days are SO special for little ones.

However, the idea of legos gives me anxiety. Maybe it's because I don't have kids, but all of those little bitty pieces. Ugh.

    1. Legos are a necessary evil with little boys :) Once you realize how deep their love runs for them you put up with the mess.

  34. Dates one-on-one with your kids, the best thing you can do, especially as they get older. We did this very thing with our girls (they are grown up now) and that is the number one thing they still talk about.

  37. What a great day! And I am so excited that I read this post -- I checked the schedule and the Lego display is coming to our city! Now I'm going to copy you and take our 6 year old Lego lover on his own special day. :)

  38. Sounds like the perfect day! The Lego exhibit looks like a traveling version of Legoland! One-on-one time is so precious. We do it when we can, but it is challenging to find time for it all. Our next outing is going to be to take our 6 year old boy to see a live theater performance of Matilda. We read the book to him and are excited to take our big guy to his first live theater performance. Thanks for sharing your special day with Luke. He definitely looks happy!

  39. Aww, this was so much fun to read! Your son looks absolutely ecstatic and I love seeing such joy. I have never heard of the Legos Road Show but my oldest son and husband are both extremely into Legos so I will have to look into that. Thank you for sharing and so glad you guys had a wonderful day together!
