Luke's Birthday Day and an extra special snack

Thank you so all much for the plethora of sweet birthday wishes for Luke here and on Instagram, via text, email, etc.  All the love for my sweet boy was so kind, thoughtful and appreciated.  This is the beginning of an emotional month for me (I feel like in one blink of an eye all of my babies get an entire year older and it is a tough pill to swallow) and it was so so so sweet of y'all to take the time to wish him a Happy Birthday :)

Birthdays are tough when they fall on a school day.  There's not a ton of celebrating that can be done when you need to leave the house by 7 am :)

Tuesday night Luke had the hardest time falling asleep because he was so excited about his birthday.  He finally drifted off way too late and then he stumbled into our room extra early with bedhead and sleepy eyes and asked, "What time is it?"

I replied with, "birthday time" and he closed his little eyes and whispered, "yes.... it's finally here". ;)

I could have eaten up his excitement with a spoon. hahaha

Here he is waiting patiently at 6:15 am for his brother and sister to come to the table.  We told him that he could open his presents before school since otherwise I thought he would be CONSUMED with excitement all day long. ;)

Time to open presents!!! ;)

Lego sets for the win!

I got to see him at lunch when I brought down cupcakes for his class and he was having the best day and after school was more of the same.

He requested pizza and crazy bread at home for dinner and this tired mama was more than happy to oblige ;)  We can't wait to celebrate with his friends tomorrow afternoon at our house with a Minecraft party!  I have scaled WAAAAAAAAAAAY back on the party and am so looking forward to a bunch of little boys just running around our house eating cake and pizza :)

When we got home from school yesterday we decided to try our hand at making "resurrection rolls".

Luke was way too busy building his new Lego sets to bother baking with us, but thankfully I still had two willing sous chefs!

We unrolled some refrigerated crescent roll dough, then spread on some melted butter and sprinkled on cinnamon sugar.  We talked about how Jesus died on the cross and how his friends used oil and spices to get him ready to be buried.

They each got a marshmallow and we talked about how it was white and how Jesus never did anything wrong or bad (it's hard explaining sin to a three year old - hahaha).

I explained how they wrapped Jesus's body in linen cloths and placed him in a tomb (we called it a cave for toddler purposed) and that guards rolled a huge stone in front.  As we talked about that we covered our marshmallows with the crescent rolls and sealed them up like the tomb was sealed.

We baked them at 350 for ten minutes (they don't look pretty... but that's what happens when you bake with toddlers), and after they cooled I put them on a plate and called the boys in...

They excitedly opened them up and found the white marshmallow gone!!!  This was when we got to talk about how Jesus was gone from the tomb because he was in heaven!

This is Luke grilling me on "how" the marshmallow disappeared. :)

The rolls are sweet and we talked about how "sweet" God's love is for us, that he sent his son to die on the cross for us.

The rolls were delish and it was an awesome illustration of the Easter story.  They were easy and kid friendly and would be a great activity/snack for this weekend.

I hope y'all have a FANTASTIC day!  And don't forget that tomorrow is Friday Favorites... see you then! ;)

  17. I am so thankful i found your blog years ago! This is such a great idea for young ones. I have a 6 and 4 year old and you are absolutely correct in trying to teach them these things in 'their terms' so they can comprehend at their young age. Glad Luke had a great birthday too! :)

  23. My seven year old little guy loves Legos, too. I hate to say that seven is when he started thinning out and lost any and all baby fat :( We bought the ingredients for the rolls and I am so excited to make them!
