The "Santa Talk"

I wrote and re-wrote a post about how we talked to Luke about Santa and I never felt like it really conveyed everything so kind of last-minute I deleted the post and recorded a video (insert the nervous face emoji here)

So there you have it in it's 15 minutes of glory...  I seriously thought it would be under 5 minutes but I like to talk :)  I'd love to hear about how you handled the "Santa Talk" at your house and/or your thoughts on more videos this year.

Videos are totally out of my comfort zone but they're something that has been brought up as a suggestion more than a few times and if I do decide to do more videos here are a few things I'll attempt to do... not film it when the sun is about to go down and the light is dim, STOP TOUCHING MY HAIR and figure out where to actually look (#holyawkward)

Happy Wednesday, friends!

  1. Thank you for this post. We are on the cusp of this at my house and I love your ideas about how to talk about it. I'll be bookmarking this for sure for when it comes up at my house.

  2. This was amazing. I love that you made him "ready" and a "Santa"!

    1. Thank you! I really wanted him to feel like this was something special and not be totally disappointed that “santa” was over.

  3. That's awesome! My problem is that my 9 year old twins are the "babies" of our family. We made it through this Christmas but I went into it fully aware that it was probably our last one with believers. Boo hoo!

    1. I totally get that! I think the babies of the family always know a little sooner than their older siblings

  4. Hi Andrea - I love your blog but notice that you don't link up with anyone else. Any reason for that? Would have loved to read how you and your family do NY goals etc. (Shay and Erika link up today). - Sarah

    1. I do on occasion (just like they link up with my Show and Tell Tuesday’s on occasion) and if you’re interested in reading about my goals for 2018 you can check out my 8 in 18 post from Monday of this week. Thanks so much for reading!

  5. I just love your approach to "santa". Love following your sweet family and anytime you want to give us more insight on the wonderful ways your family handles certain situations with your kids I am all ears. :)

  6. My kids are 21 & 19 and still believe...LOL! They each told me at one point they knew, we talked about how much fun it is, and Santa kept on coming. I LOVE the fun of Santa and still leave them a couple of things from Santa each year. Crazy, I know, but still fun!

  7. We actually never had an official talk with our 4 kids, but anytime they would ask, I'd just tell them it is always important to have something to believe in, especially good things. When they'd say "well, so and so at school said..." I'd reply that you need to believe what is in your own heart, not what someone else tells you to believe...they enjoyed Santa until about 12/13 whether it was for my benefit or not is another story..but they went along with it!! Precious memories for sure.

  8. Out of all my favorite posts of yours, this might be my number one. Thank you!! My son is 8 and on the cusp of figuring out Santa. It makes me sad but you gave a whole new perspective and helped me be prepared for that conversation.

  9. The video was great Andrea! :) I think this is a perfect explanation for Santa! I think it's awesome that Luke is excited to be "santa" along with you and Dave, and take over the elf on the shelf responsibilities too.

  10. This was GREAT. Our oldest is in first grade this year so I know that the inevitable questions will arise in the next couple of years and I'm SO not looking forward to it.

  11. Can you share this yearly? Hahah! My kids aren’t old enough yet... but I’ll need a refresher yearly! Ha! Thanks for sharing!

  12. I love the video!! You have to do more! I'm in the same boat with my 9 year old. I dodged the bullet this year but I know the jig is up. Tt was so special to me to know that this was the last year and really savor it. Its so awesome to watch them grow up but its bittersweet at the same time. Hugs Mama!

  13. I love this! Well done mama! Mine are 5 and 2 so hopefully we've got a while but I'm so glad you mentioned that ya'll participate but don't make it the main focus. I feel that's how we are trying to approach it so we can enjoy the fun things but emphasize that it's all about Jesus. Will definitely be taking notes from you for the future!

  14. Loved this! My parents did something similar to you. I was always able to wrap the Santa presents once I learned. I think my parents wanted any excuse to not have to wrap.

  15. I loved this! I am the oldest and was so excited when my mom let me in on the Santa secret ;) I had a blast shopping for my younger sisters! I thought this video was fun!

  16. When my daughter found out the "Santa Secret" she took over the elf on the shelf job for our younger son and her ideas were so awesome!!! I have documented all of them in photos and love those sweet memories, as she has now left for university:(

  17. You are an amazing Mom and Luke is so, so lucky that he has a Mom that put so much thought into such a touchy subject. I wouldn’t have thought about spinning it around and making it like it’s an exciting thing for him now that he knows — that he can be a Santa helper now, too! I wish I could explain how big of a blessing your blog has been to my life... from family stuff, to kindness, but mostly living life with Jesus at the center. I will always be grateful to you, girl

  18. I love this. My daughter is in third grade and my son in first. Questions were asked so so much this year but they just weren’t ready. Similar questions about “manufacturers” boxes, does Santa have a budget, etc. But each time I asked “what do you think” they talked themselves back to he’s “real”. But just Monday, my daughter asked again, so I know it was discussed in school since it was their first day back. I saw the same post about being a “Santa” and wanted to share that with them when they are ready. I’m so glad to have watched this to see how you approached it. And I’m so glad you mentioned Jesus and God because that has always been my fear, that they would think they were being duped about Him. Hopefully we’ve share the word of God we’ll enough that they wouldn’t think that but we will definitely incorporate it into our talk when the time comes. Thanks for sharing!!
