San Fran Trip - 17 mile drive

Wednesday we had a slow morning packing up and grabbing breakfast at the hotel.

After breakfast Dave, Mason and Griffin hopped in a Waymo and headed to the rental car pickup spot. We had seen Waymos LITERALLY EVERYWHERE all week and were completely intrigued by the self-driving vehicles. I'd actually downloaded the Zoox app earlier in the week so we could do a 6-person driverless vehicle but never got "accepted" so not sure what that was about. Only 4 people could ride in a Waymo and Luke had ridden in one with a friend during a trip earlier this year and I had about zero desire to ride in one so off those three went! They said it was super bizarre but also REALLY nice AND they almost got t-boned by a fire truck soooooo they're probably one and done ;) hahaha

They grabbed the rental and then came back to the hotel to pick up me and Luke and our bags and we got on the road to head down to Pebble Beach. Essentially we had to be out of our hotel by 11 and couldn't check into our VRBO until 4:00 so instead of having the hotel hold our bags and doing something in the city we opted to drive along Hwy 1 and check out Pebble Beach and the scenic 17-mile drive.

We'd been pretty go-go-go until this point and nobody minded the 2.5 hour (or so) car drive and the views along the way were GORGEOUS!

Everyone started getting hungry and we happened to see this cute little spot so we decided to stop there for lunch.

Still not over all these succulents everywhere.

We played cards, ate some greasy diner food and thoroughly enjoyed our little pitstop.

We made another quick stop in Monterey...

... for some shopping, some views....

.... some ice cream...

... and to stick our toes in the water apparently ;)

Some of us had to walk back to the car shoeless because we were so sandy ;)

Then it was back to the car to head to the gate of 17-mile drive. Sooooooo.... I didn't do a ton of looking into this portion of our day ;) My dad mentioned it, the boys really wanted to see the golf course, we had the time AND it was pretty much free (I think it was $12.50 to get in) AND everything I read said it was stunning so off we went.

What I didn't realize was that there were a few different points on the drive where you could park, get out, and actually go out onto the beaches. If I had known that we would have prepared a little better and maybe not worn pants and had towels ;)

Regardless - it was everything we thought it would be plus more and was definitely a trip highlight.

Every time we'd get back into the van to head to the next spot we'd be like "it can't get any better than that" and somehow it did.

They're super hard to see in this pic - but we even saw SEA OTTERS!!! Just floating along eating fish on their backs. UNREAL!

The golf course wasn't too shabby either ;)

The only regret from the day was not having more time there! Such a fun afternoon and WELL worth the drive down.

We opted not to take Hwy 1 back toward San Francisco to save on time and the views were still on point ;)

After a quick Target run...

... we made it (in complete darkness) to our rental house in Muir Beach and used our cell phones to snap pics from the balcony to try and get a peek at the ocean view we couldn't see.

We unloaded and got settled and had a fine dining experience of chicken and mac and cheese ;)

We started a puzzle (duh!), played a game of Life and all slept super well not in one room ;)

HAPPY Monday, friends!!!
