Reading Recap

I'm back sooner rather than later because Christmas break provided a lot of time for me to listen to audiobooks as well as read on the couch.  THE BEST!  If you missed my last post you can find it HERE.

I LOVED The Spy CoastThe main character is a retired CIA operative who is trying to live the quiet life in a small town in Maine when a dead body turns up in her driveway.  She enlists the help of other retirees in her small town and "The Martini Club" gets to work.  This book went back and forth from past to present revealing more of Maggie's backstory as it went along and it was just an all-around great read.

None of This is True was dark and twisty and chilling and I ate it up!  Josie and her husband are celebrating Josie's 45th birthday in a pub. At a table nearby, podcaster Alix is also celebrating her 45th birthday. Josie has a quiet, reserved, different type of life, and Alix seems to have everything Josie wants. The two meet and discover that they are "birthday twins" and this eventually involves Alix interviewing Josie for her podcast. Josie tells the tale of her life and Alix is shocked. But what is true? Is any of it?

Killers of a Certain Age was another win for me.  Billie, Mary Alice, Helen, and Natalie have worked for the Museum, an elite network of assassins, for forty years. Now their talents are considered old-school and no one appreciates what they have to offer in an age that relies more on technology than people skills.

When the foursome is sent on an all-expenses paid vacation to mark their retirement, they are targeted by one of their own. Only the Board, the top-level members of the Museum, can order the termination of field agents, and the women realize they've been marked for death.

I found all four women endearing and I LOVED the idea of them being this band of unlikely older women assassins.  LOVED IT!

The premise of One Day in December is that Laurie and Jack make eye contact at a bus stop and it's "love at first sight" and then they reconnect years later when Jack is dating Laurie's best friend.  I wanted to like this one but, honestly, Jack was a total turd for most of the book and I really didn't find myself rooting for him and Laurie.  I feel like it was supposed to feel romantic but it just kind of felt ick.  I'm also a little bit jaded when it comes to these kinds of books so take my review with a grain of salt ;)

I listened to Bright Young Women over Christmas break and, honeslty, feel kind of conflicted.  This review from goodreads pretty much sums it up for me...
"Basically, this is a book about the victims of Ted Bundy, the serial killer whose judge called him a “bright young man”. The author has flipped that, and wrote about the bright young women who were taken from this world too soon. Because I’m conflicted, I’m going to go with pros and the one con with this one.

Pros:
-I love that in this book, we are celebrating both the women who were murdered, and those who survived. Ted Bundy is only known as “The Defendant”, because his name isn’t the important one in this recounting.
-The writing was great!
-This is very different look at the story of Bundy.

Con:
-I wish our main characters were real. This focuses mainly on a sorority house where two women were killed and two horribly injured. Those events did happen, but not exactly how it went in the book. The odd mixture of true crime and fictional characters is what I think totally threw me off with this book."

While I did enjoy it I'm still on the fence about how I feel and it was LOOOONG so keep that in mind!

I heard about The Jolliest Bunch on one of my favorite podcasts and immediately downloaded it after listening to Bright Young Women and needing something light.  LIGHT IT WAS, Y'ALL!  I giggled out loud and enjoyed Danny's short stories immensely.  It was the perfect mix of nostalgia, pop culture and funny.  I can definitely see myself relistening to this next year to kick off the Holiday season and highly recommend if you need a laugh or two.

Luke and I listened to The Firm on our trips to Pitt State and Arkansas the past two weekends and we both LOVED IT!  It's a legal thriller and was fun to listen to together and we found ourselves pausing often to discuss how much better than nineties are than today ;) hahaha. The fact that there were no cameras to record their comings and goings, no "facial recognition" or internet searches made the whole thing that much better.

HAPPY Wednesday and happy reading, friends!!!
