Reading recap

Life has been BUSY lately and I haven't had a chance to read as much as I had been BUT I'm sharing anyway because if I don't I'll forget what I read :)

First up....  Before She Knew Him was messed up in all the right ways.  It was a creepy thriller that gave me goosebumps a few different times and freaked me out because the story felt so real and believable.  The plot twists weren't obvious or predictable and I for sure didn't see the ending coming. If you're down for an extra creepy psychological  I for sure recommend.

I think that  Marriage of Inconvenience was part of an audible $5 sale because I'm not sure how else I ended up with the 7th book in a series without reading the first six.  I also didn't realize it was categorized as a romance otherwise I probably wouldn't have picked it up because that's not really my jam.  I had heard great things about Penny Reid and so I gave it a listen and while I did enjoy the book overall I didn't enjoy the gratuitous use of the f-word OR some of the steamier sections.  I'm not opposed to either of those in a book BUT there were A LOT of both.  I did love the story line (there was some suspense and mystery woven in there) and the characters were great so take that for what it's worth :)  Also - I listened to this as an audiobook and feel like maybe I wouldn't have felt as strongly about the language or content if I had been reading it myself rather than having it read to me if that makes sense.

Stillhouse Lake was exciting from beginning to end.  Seriously... from the very first page.  Again - I need to be better about doing my research before diving in because this is part of a series and now I'm committed to a few books in a row :)  It's a dark story of murder, betrayal and a mom protecting her kids and I have the next book in my lineup already.  If you're looking for a series to dive into this summer and love a mystery/thriller I'd definitely recommend.

The Summer House was charming and sweet and a PERFECT summer read.  Lily wakes up one morning to find that her husband has disappeared and left a note asking her for a divorce.  She finds herself starting over as a hairstylist in a beachside retirement community and everything about the book is just flat out DARLING.  The relationships are believable and lovely and the setting and characters are incredibly endearing.  It was sweet without being cheesy which can be hard to find and it got me excited to check out a few other books by Lauren K. Denton as well.

I'd love to know if you've been reading anything great lately!  I'm working on my summer reading list and would love to add a few more titles!

HAPPY Thursday, friends!

  1. I recently read Firefly Lane and the Wife Upstairs. Both were so good.

  2. I have been enjoying a few books by T Greenwood. I especially loved the first one, 'Keeping Lucy' about a woman who gives birth to a child with Down Syndrome. Her affluent inlaws demand that the child be institutionalized at birth. When the mother discovers concerns about the institution, she kidnaps Lucy, and falls in love with the then two year old little girl.

  6. I read Stillhouse lake and while I really wanted to dive into the next books to see what happened that is not normally a genre I enjoy reading and I haven't quite worked my way up to reading it yet. The Summer House sounds more my speed!

  8. I read The Break-Up Book Club (coming Ma 18) by Wendy Wax and I love her books, especially the 10 Beach Road series. Are We There Yet was a great, eye-opening read for a mom/parent of a tween kiddo.

  9. I am currently reading Nine Perfect Strangers by Liane Moriarty. I’m not done yet so can’t vouch for the ending but so far I can hardly put it down. I have both the audio and text version (so can go back and forth) - the narration is fantastic!!! Although a couple of her last books have been “eh”, I think she’s done a great job (so far) with this one.
Have you read The Wives (Tarryn Fisher)? Not generally my type of book but I had to finish it to see how it ended!!! Definitely up your alley though ;)
I could NEVER find time to read when I was in the classroom FT - good for you!!!

  10. Oh, I forgot to mention....I am reading The Engineer’s Wife by Tracey Emerson Wood right now too. It’s historical fiction based on the building of the Brooklyn Bridge. I think this is one you might really like based on past reviews you’ve given. I used to do a project in my 7th grade geography class on the Seven Wonders of the United States and the Brooklyn Bridge is one of them...such a fascinating story told from the wife’s POV.
