Rosie Roo

Meet Rosie Roo!  I joke that every time I say "NEVER" it ends up happening and a second (giant!) dog is no exception to my theory.  You'd think I would have learned my lesson by now!

The kids have been asking for a second dog for months and months - they wanted a big dog (which is a relative term since Jack is so small) and had a whole big long list of reasons we needed another pet :)   Dave and I started doing research and time and time again the English Mastiff kept coming up as an ideal breed for our family.  YES they're giant (literally, they're classified as a giant breed) BUT they're exceptionally sweet, loyal, great with kids, DOCILE (read: lazy) and wonderful family dogs.  It really was all about disposition and personality for us and the English Mastiff was exactly the temperament we were after.  At first I was like "ABSOLUTELY NOT" but as we continued doing research and looking at other breeds, reading EVERYTHING, scrolling hashtags, watching all the videos on YouTube, etc. the pros started outweighing the cons (lots of food, lots of drool, etc.).  and we figured that we'd wait until the timing was right and then go for it.

Enter quarantine - school being cancelled for the remainder of the school year, summer plans up in the air and we started looking for a puppy close to us.  We found and fell in love with the sweetest little fawn-colored female puppy and she was ready to come home with us this past weekend.

Even though we've been having conversations about getting a dog and the responsibilities that go along with that - the kids had NO CLUE that we were getting her this weekend (or at all!)

I asked Luke to run an errand with me on Saturday morning and he happily obliged, when we pulled into the parking lot we saw this lady standing out by her car and I go, "OH MY GOSH! Look at that cute puppy" to which he replied "awww.... " and I said, "that's YOUR puppy" and very confused he goes, "yes! she's a mastiff like what we've been talking about" and I went, "NO! that's YOUR puppy!" and he just about jumped out of the car.

LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT!!!

It was so much fun to have him "in on" the secret and he held her all the way home and couldn't stop beaming!

We got home and "hid" in the side of the backyard and texted Dave to tell him we were ready - he told Mason and Griffin that he saw a bunny out in the yard and to go check it out.  They had no clue and their reactions were PRICELESS!

We spent pretty much the entire weekend checking out her HUGE paws....

... playing...

... and just getting to know Rosie Roo.

Jelly Bean Jones has been checking Rosie out from a safe distance.  I'm sure it won't be long before she's tormenting her like she does Jack Bauer - Jelly Bean is really the one who rules the roost at our house :)  Can you see her in the background of the pic below?  That's pretty much how she's been the entire time.

Jack Bauer has been VERRRRRY excited to meet Rosie but he's been so excited that it's kind of freaked her out.  All the jumping and sniffing and general tiny-dog-nonsense sent her hiding on a few occasions so we kept them apart on Saturday and let them play and explore with each other on Sunday.  I'm sure they'll be fast friends in no time flat - but for now it's just a lot of sniffing :)

We are OVER THE MOON with Rosie Roo and while we know that puppies are WORK we are so excited for the years of family memories to come.

Happy Monday, friends!!!

  2. We are all just so excited for you!!! We've been talking about it all morning on and off as a family and it makes us love our mastiff even more thinking back to the day we got her. I think mastiffs are the best kept secret. :) We had been doing research for 3 years and it was the same for me- we kept landing on a mastiff but I had ruled it out because we have to travel back and forth between Europe and the US. Then we went to a pet store (they still have dogs for sale here) and there was a room with golden retrievers, labs, and one french mastiff. The other puppies were going nuts, stumbling all over themselves and crazy when they brought the food bowl in. The mastiff sat tall and still and waited patiently- I was blown away! We didn't get ours from a pet store, but we went to visit what I thought was a pregnant dog to just see how big they really get and then found out they had 5 week old puppies right there at the house! Needless to say, we reserved our Violet that day.

I had a moment a few days in where I was overwhelmed and wondered what in the world we had done (we had a baby, a toddler, and a preschooler at the time, too!), but that overwhelm quickly went away when we all just fell in love with her and I relaxed. As for the drool, ours doesn't drool THAT much, but she does if she just got a drink of water. We've gotten lazy with it, but it's easy to just wipe off of her. She has slimed us quite a bit over her life, but it's worth it for all the love she's given us, too. I hope you guys love Rosie Roo as much as we have loved our Violet! And I love the story of how you surprised the kids!!

    1. This is just the SWEETEST!!! I had one of those moments as she was crying in her crate last night :) hahaha Thankfully she was just as sweet as ever in the morning. The puppy phase is no joke but we're loving it and are excited about all the fun times with her in the future! And the drool was a big turnoff for me too... but I had a moment where I realized that I'm only going to have my kids at home for 11 more years - I'll take the drool in exchange for some fun memories and experiences and can keep it pristine after they're gone. ;)

  7. She is PRECIOUS! Congratulations!!!!! We got a puppy about a month ago and I know it’s all because of the COVID but was such a great decision, we’re in love! Can’t wait to see your sweet pup grow up!

  8. I absolutely LOVE mastiffs. Always have, just haven't been able to talk the hubby into getting one. For him it's all the drool and such a big dog for inside. Is Rosie going to be an inside dog? Will love seeing firsthand how it goes with her...maybe I can convince the hubs into getting me one. :)

  13. Congratulations! Mastiff's are great dogs and are the sweetest "lap" dogs you will ever find. One of my close friends has had several and they have all been such loving, great companion pooches. I have always loved big (giant) dogs and have had many over the years. Can't wait to see all of her shenanigans!! :)

    1. Yes, get her around as many other dogs as possible. The over socialization will prevent dog aggression and it wears out puppies so it's a win win for everyone. We love our mastiff!!

  15. I'm thinking our next dog will be a mastif. She is so precious with her giant paws and face wrinkles. I look forward to hearing how it goes! We are huge dog fans, and have three. I always said I'd never have that many. I've also learned to never say never...we will always have two from here on out, though, because it gives each other a play mate. Happy Monday!

  24. Oh. My. Gosh!!!! We have a 10 year old bullmastiff. She was our first "baby". They are amazing dogs. Very lazy and love to hold down the couch and make sure it doesn't move. I would say roll up your rugs until she's potty trained bc they have large bladders. And over socialize with other dogs. You will love her so much! Oh my gosh now I want another! And I said we would never get another giant breed dog. LOL

  25. Well, now I need a Mastiff, thanks. I can't even deal with the cuteness!!! In the upcoming days, when you are thinking to yourself, "I wonder if my blog readers are tired of pictures of the dog?" The answer is NO!! Do all the dog posts!!!!! Precious, congrats!!

  26. We got a quarantine puppy too. Best decision ever! He's a lab mix and a big lug. He's going to be big but he's the sweetest. Its fun being home with this happy guy that brings joy during a tough time. Enjoy your time with your pup! Practice crate time so when we all go back Rosie is used to it.

  30. Make sure you start puppy training now. Get the vedio Leash Off/Game On! It teaches you & your pup 10 games to play at 3 min. Each Game! Everything starts in the House first! Feed at 6:A.M. if not finished, give him 15 min. To eat the rest. If not remove food & don't feed till 6:P.M. After feeding about half hour later take him out in yard to do his Business. When feeding him put bowl of food up by your mouth. Act like you are eating making noises that make him think it's real Good. In the Wild Alfa eats first. You are establishing that You are the Alfa. This is Realy Important to him. I train Dog's & Puppys using these game's. Training 1 Rockweller,2 Pittbulls,1 Husky,1 Belgia Malnois, 1 English Bulldog.

  31. We have Roxie-Roo, an English Mastiff rescue, who is now 7.5 yrs. She is the absolute most wonderful part of our world! She's about 145lbs and stunningly beautiful, incredibly affectionate, and very sensitive. I agree with comments RE training and socializing ASAP and often. EM's are fiercely loyal and protective, with obvious strength and less obvious determination. Roxie is a huge, loving, sweet mush who brings live and joy to our lives. We are beyond grateful that we found our way to her, from our home in Massachusetts to her birthplace in Texas. Enjoy that beautiful little pupper!!

  32. Alternatively, you could buy one crate big enough to house your adult dog and block off the excess area so your puppy cannot eliminate at one end and just move to another. best puppy crate
