Luke's Updated Room

Today I'm sharing Luke's room refresh!!!  A few months ago he mentioned wanting more desk space and a bigger bed and started scheming up ideas/thoughts and we started coming up with a plan. We talked a lot about what he needed and wanted and then pretty much ran with it!  He is OBSESSED with his updated room and I'm loving how organized everything is at the moment :)

Before I start - I wanted to let you know that Luke and I talked about whether he was okay with me sharing about his room on my blog and he has approved everything I'm sharing.

Luke works at his desk ALL THE TIME.  Legos, snap circuits, model cars, etc.  At any given moment his desk is typically covered in 1,000,000 pieces of something.  He desperately wanted more work space and we desperately didn't want to see the mess every time we walked past his door so we decided on moving his bed to where his desk used to be...

... which makes the view from the door so much better!

We picked the KOPARDAL bed frame from IKEA because the headboard was less obtrusive which was important since his bed was going in front of the window.  It's pretty low to the ground but still high enough that we have two large plastic bins (without lids) underneath for him to pull out like drawers for all of his loose legos and other lego projects he's working on but doesn't want out.

We also took down the curtain rod above his window and I still need to patch the paint but I like it so much better than before!

The original plan was for one of the nightstands (NIKKEBY 4-drawer stand from IKEA) but he really wanted two and now I"m so glad we did both...

I found some  really cool Luke-approved lamps (love the acrylic bases!)

... and one of the best parts of the cabinets is that since they're metal they're magnetic.  We used magnetic labels to label the insides of the drawers and got some mesh magnetic holders to go inside of his "nightstand drawer" to hold chap stick, sunglasses, change, etc.

Luke is SO into Harry Potter and we found  these sheets that are Harry Potter without being overly "character-y" and rugby striped :)

We picked out  this "waffle" comforter set and I fully support the gray theme :)

He wanted to keep his bulletin board and he picked out some pictures to print this weekend and updating it is on his to-do-list this week :)

So the desk area is hands-down his favorite part.  I mentioned how much he works at his desk and now he has more than enough space to work on alllll his projects.  We used two PAHL desks (the 48" desk tops) to make the L-shape and it works so well for him.

The set of 3 shelves was installed when we moved in (3 years ago) and when I went back to IKEA to get a couple more they didn't have the exact same ones but they had some that are so similar you probably wouldn't have known they were different if I hadn't told you :)

I ordered this really cool Hogwart's art print but it hasn't come in yet so that's what the empty frame is for :)

Luke has always built and then rebuilt and then taken apart his Lego sets to use to make other things but recently he's been wanting to keep and display them so he is LOVING the additional shelves.  The original plan was a second set of three BUT then Hogwart's castle wouldn't have fit underneath and we couldn't have that :)

The rolling cart on the right is also from IKEA and uses it to store his origami books, loose paper, tools, etc.

The opposite wall has his closet doors and circle shelf (and a fiddle leaf that I'm trying to rehabilitate and am hoping loves the sun up here).

Lots f special rocks/items from his collection and favorite books...

So there you go!  He absolutely loves it and I love how happy it makes him!  Growing up my parents let my brother and I have pretty much free rein in our rooms and I know how much I appreciated the independence and freedom so it's fun to see my own kids feel the same way.

Happy Monday, friends!!!

  4. Great room and space for Luke!
Have you gotten him any of the HP illustrated books? They are soooooo beautifully done and it is the entire book, word-for-word...definitely worth the investment!

    1. He LOVES rocks and has a big collection so rather than displaying all of them he picked out some of his biggest/favorite ones and we displayed those so he could enjoy them :)

  8. Hi! Are the desks new also, or were both of those in there before? My girls need space in their toy room to spread out their legos and I can figure out what is the best option! Thanks!

  13. One, I think Luke and my 11-year old daughter might be soul mates. Two, those IKEA desks are THE BEST. And, three, I am obsessed with all the Harry Potter legos. I'm so excited it's almost Christmas so I have an excuse to buy more for my Harry Potter loving girl (although I secretly wish they were mine)!
