Three Things - First Day of School Edition

These three cuties started school on Monday and so I felt it was only appropriate to do a "Three Things" post all about it :)

1 - The day FINALLY came!!!
She's only been asking to go to school for at least a year... and even more so since turning four (because we always talked about her going to school once she was four).  She ran into our room Monday morning absolutely ECSTATIC!  There was squealing and screaming and even some jumping up and down :)

2 - Like a Pro
I credit her absolute confidence on the first day partly to being a "teacher's kid" and being at MCA since she was about 5 days old, partly to her third child birth order and desire to keep up with her big brothers and partly to her God-given personality.  Whatever it was - girlfriend handled the first day like a PRO!  No nerves, no tears  - all smiles :)

3 - Best Day EVER
Griffin officially declared Monday the BEST DAY EVER!  She loved everything about it, especially the "tooty-ta" song and playing with shaving cream.

1 - Met with Resistance
This was the first year that Luke hasn't been 100% thrilled with going back to school.  While he was excited, he definitely was remiss about summer ending and having to "get up and do stuff" ;)  He is absolutely loving his teacher and being with his friends and is on board with school now, but I felt his pain!

2 - Honor Choir
Luke came home on the first day of school excited to audition for Honor Choir.  This was a bit of a surprise for me and Dave but we are so proud of him for putting himself out there and trying something new.  His audition was yesterday and whether or not he makes it we're thrilled!

3 - Real Work
We took the kids out for lunch after the first day and got a big chuckle that Luke's only complaint from the day was that they didn't do any "real work" :)  We'll see how long that lasts!

1 - Bye, Mom!
When we got to school on the first day Mason immediately ran into his friends Jack and Ben and instead of wanting to wait for me to walk him to class he asked if he could go with his friends.  I wanted to tell him, "heck, no!", but resisted ;)  Instead we did a quick hug and kiss and off he went!

2 - Reward Cards
One of the very first things Mason couldn't wait to tell us about his new class and teacher is that she has these cards that she initials when she catches them doing something good and when they get 5 initials on the card they can trade it in for a reward.  He came home DETERMINED to get his card filled by Tuesday so he could trade it in for a privilege and bring a stuffed animal to school.  Happy to report he's proudly toting a dragon beanie boo to class today!

3 - Special Job
I've mentioned before how much we adore Mason's teacher (she was Luke's first grade teacher as well) as she really KNOWS the kids and somehow figures out their little personalities quickly and incredibly well.  Well... on meet the teacher night Mason came home SO PROUD because she told him that she knew what a great friend he is and told him that she put him close by a new kid in the class because she knew he'd make him feel welcome.  Y'all.  He was glowing.

It was a great reminder to me as a mom and a teacher how incredibly powerful encouraging and uplifting words can be to our kids.

We couldn't have asked for a better first day and I'm feeling #allthefeels having all three at school with me.  I know I've mentioned this before, but having all three in school has always been this "one day" type of thing and all of a sudden it's here and while I'm nostalgic and a bit sad that the baby/toddler phase is over I'm so incredibly proud of the "big kids" they're all becoming.

I'm predicting that this is going to be a big year for us as we shift into life with three kids in school and we are ready and excited to see what lies ahead!

Happy Wednesday, friends!

  5. I choked up reading about how sweet Mason's new teacher is. I am so thankful for sweet teachers who pour into our kids day in and day out. My son is going into 2nd grade and smiled when I read that Luke wasn't thrilled about going back to school, that's exactly what my son said last night. School is fine but he loves being home! Happy back to school to you! xoxo ERIN

  12. I remember sitting with you in the nursing room at church asking you about childcare when griffin was a baby. And I totally didn't understand how you made it work as a working mom of 3! But this is why!! Right here, having them all at school with you! Go you!!! And now as a mom of 3, I totally get it! Ha!!! Sorry for being a naive first time Mom!

Luke looks so old! I wanna hear about your & dave's first day/week. I bet he was missing Griffin! Just one more baby, Andrea. Or adopt :)

  17. What a great reminder to use encouraging and uplifting words with our kids. Sometimes I feel like all I do is correct them when I should really be focusing on pointing out the great things they do. That works wonders!

  20. Growing up, my mom was the librarian teacher at the private Catholic School my siblings and I all went to. I know she loved being there with us during the day and now that I'm older and hope to start my own family soon, I see how much of a blessing that was for our family back then. Your kids are just as lucky and will realize this one day (although I'm sure to some extent they do already)! Good luck to y'all in the new school year! I admire you and your family so much!

  21. As a mom of a kid in speech, I am really happy you shared the choir interest! Even if it doesn't work out, it's awesome that he believes so much in himself. Good job to you, the parents, for making it "part of him" vs some huge "issue." I hope mine will belt it out in choir one day! PS- beautiful font. Are you willing to share the name? Thanks!
