Grinch Party

My kids have been GRINCH OBSESSED lately and we are itching to get to the theater to watch the new one.  In the meantime, I whipped up a fun little afternoon of Grinch activities (and snacks!) to ramp up the excitement even more.

This post is sponsored by  eBay.  eBay is the perfect place to find all your holiday decorating and entertaining needs including stand mixers to use while you're whipping up festive recipes and THE BEST portable nugget ice maker that's great for parties (and your afternoon diet coke) :)  eBay isn't just for auctions - 81% of the merchandise is actually available with a "buy it now" option and 69% of the listings ship for free!  Below are some of my favorite kitchen appliances as well as a few that I'd love for my kitchen all available to purchase now and have in time for Christmas!

Griffin and I kicked off the afternoon by whipping up some Grinch cookies.

Here's What You'll Need...
- 1 box vanilla cake mix
- 1/2 cup vegetable oil
- 2 eggs
- green food coloring
- heart sprinkles

Here's What You'll Do...

Step 1) Pose really cute and then dump the cake mix, eggs, oil and a few drops of green food coloring into the bowl of  the stand mixer.  Turn the mixer on high so that cake mix goes everywhere and then turn it down and let it continue to mix until everything is combined and it's the shade of green you'd like.  Make sure you stick your fingers into the cookie dough and try to eat way more than your mom allows.

The dough is going to look like play dough but it's fine!  Promise! Pop it into the refrigerator and let it chill for about 20 minutes...

Step 2) Scoop the dough out by tablespoon, roll them in powdered sugar and put a sprinkle on top.

Step 3) Bake at 350 degrees for 8 minutes, let them cool for 2 minutes and then transfer them to a wire rack to continue to cool.

Look how fun they are!!!

If you're looking for a gourmet cookie this is not the recipe for you (in case the box of cake mix didn't give that away), BUT if you're looking to whip up something easy and fun with your kids this is the recipe for you!  They taste just like cupcakes and are pretty much fool proof (plus... you could make them any color you want!)

While the cookies were chilling and baking we conducted a little science experiment.  We drew red sharpie hearts on green balloons and then used a funnel to put about 1/3 cup of baking soda into each balloon.

I put the balloons onto the tops of water bottles that each had a little bit of vinegar in them and then we counted to three and the kids lifted their balloon, dumping the baking soda into the vinegar and...

... we watched the Grinch's heart GROW!  They LOVED THIS!

We also made a quick craft using clear plastic ornaments, green pom poms and red acrylic paint.  These were ridiculously simple... they just filled the ornaments with poms, painted on a heart and called it a day!

Before we started stuffing they guessed how many poms would fit and I thought that these turned out super cute!  They were the perfect addition to the tree in the playroom.

Last, but not least, we needed a Grinchy beverage to go along with our cookies so we "Grinchified" our standard limeade recipe with a little food coloring.  I used half a can of frozen limeade concentrate and a little more than half a bottle of Sprite Zero.  I added a few too many drops of green food coloring (ours ended up being REALLY green!) and we poured it over our favorite nugget ice and enjoyed with a red straw.

Here's my PSA for today - if you're a Sonic ice fan you have GOT to check out  the Opal ice machine.  Dave LOVES this ice and this machine has been such a treat.  It's a countertop ice maker and here's why we love it...

- it doesn't have to be connected to a water supply!  You fill a little internal basin and that's it!  You can move it around for entertaining vs. daily use and even take it with you to events.

- it makes ice QUICK!  It starts making ice in about 15 minutes and is full within about 45

- The ice is PERFECTLY crunchable and everyone drinks WAY more water when this is around

If your kids are as Grinch-loving as mine I hope you found an idea or two for a fun evening or afternoon activity.  I also hope that you may have found some inspiration for a Christmas gift for someone on your list.

Happy Thursday, friends!!!
