Spooky Snack Mix

This weekend we whipped up some festive little snack bags to stock our snack basket for the next couple of weeks and turned it into a fun activity so I thought I'd share!

We used mini chocolate chip cookies, orange gummy slices, Cheez-Its, Pretzels, Chocolate covered pretzels and Reese's Pieces (I tried to pick things that were orange, black and white).

Luke was at the lake so I set up two little "stations" for the kids to work at...

I figured out about how many of each item would need to go in each bag to make about 45 snack bags and labeled them so they could practice counting as they put them into the ziplocks.

The counting part took Griffin FOREVER (hahaha), but it was great practice.

He seriously had so much fun making these.  Which was really random - but great!  I think he liked feeling like he was contributing and accomplishing it all on his own.  So sweet!  He also reminded me that he couldn't bring peanut butter for his in-class snacks (his class is peanut-free, Griffin and Luke's are not) so we switched out his Reeses for M&Ms.

This was a really simple activity and I really didn't expect the kids to have as much fun as they did.  We have a well-stocked snack basket...

... and it hasn't just been the kids who have enjoyed them! :)

I definitely think we'll do this little activity again... at Christmas it would be fun with red and green M&Ms instead of Reeses, marshmallows instead the orange slices and maybe the green and red goldfish instead of Cheez-Its.  The kids really enjoyed assembling the bags and it wasn't just fun, but helpful as well.

Hope you're having a great Thursday!!!

  14. This is so cute! We make "goody mix" fairly often and I've tried a TON of different things. Mini marshmallows get hard fairly quickly so they aren't my favorite add-in.

  16. Looks yummy! Not healthy though - not sure that I think this is a good idea for kids' snacks.

    1. Thanks, Lizounette! We tend to do "everything in moderation" so a bag of this every once in a while isn't an issue in our house. Thanks for the input!

  17. So, I ended up doing this with my preschoolers. I made some adjustments and called it Scarecrow Crunch. I hope to get it up on the blog tomorrow. I'd love you to take a peek. I'll for sure give you credit. You're the shizzle. :D
