Easy Craft - Sidewalk Chalk Paint

I heard about cornstarch "chalk paint" a few months ago and had it on my list of things to try this summer.  We headed out yesterday morning before it got too hot and had SO MUCH FUN mixing, painting and creating!

Here's what we used...

Cornstarch, water, food coloring.  That's it!  I had measuring spoons to measure out the cornstarch and a little fork to whisk the paints together.  And then of course brushes to paint.  ;)
(and excuse our tea-stained pitcher!  It was handy and non-breakable so we ran with it!)

I let the kids each scoop about 1 tablespoon of cornstarch into each well in the muffin tin and then squeeze several drops of food coloring on top.  After that they scooped about a tablespoon of water into each and then took turns stirring them to combine it.  We had to add a little bit more water into some of them in order to get all of the corn starch to dissolve.... I don't think there's any magic ratio of water to corn starch.... just mix until it feels like paint.  So so so simple!  They did rinse the fork off in the big pitcher of water in between colors.

Look how vibrant and fun!

After we mixed the colors I gave them free reign to paint the driveway...

Luke was painting Pikachu :)

The kids had fun trying out the different brushes and it was neat to watch the colors dry and become lighter  (the red) or more vibrant (the blue) as they dried.  We also experimented with having a lot vs a little bit of paint on our brushes and saw how that affected the final color.

At the end we even did some "splatter" painting :)

Silly faces :)

And when we dumped out the water pitcher at the end that provided an additional few minutes of entertainment as well ;)

In case you were wondering, the kids did get it on their clothes and it all came out with a few sprays of Dreft stain remover.

This was such an easy little morning project and it was extra nice because I had all of the ingredients and supplies on hand.  Hoping you get a chance to try it with your kids soon!

Happy Wednesday!!!

    1. Ours sprayed off with the hose.... well the part that the kids could part with. Some of it is still on there : )

  4. As a kindergarten teacher and mom of 3 I always add a squirt of laundry detergent (liquid works best) or even dish detergent (in a pinch) to all of my paints and I find it makes paint (or chalk paint) come out of clothes super easy!

  6. Great idea! Random question, does Mason know that TCU is in the College World Series? The reason I ask is because I thought of him on Friday. I live in Omaha, where the CWS are played and walking around the stadium I saw boys in their TCU gear and thought about Mason. Since our hometown teams never make it to the CWS, we always root for either Oregon State, TCU or the Cinderella story teams. :)
