Happy (Early) Birthday, Mason!

Mason's birthday falls on Easter this year and so I thought I'd share his birthday post a few days early :)

Dear Mason,

You're turning 6 this Saturday despite my efforts to convince you to stay five forever.  I've begged, bribed and bargained.... but you're bound and determined to grow up.  Thankfully you have big plans for us to get married and for me to make you macaroni and cheese every night and you'd better believe I'm 100% on board ;)

This year has been a big one for you.  You have shown that not only are you kind, personable and an absolute blast... but we've also gotten to see how resilient and hard-working you are as well.  You don't give yourself enough credit and we often have to push you to your potential, but when you meet your goal you are SO proud and most of the time you realize you were way closer to accomplishing it than you even thought.

You are passionate about TCU, whatever Luke is into and your friends.  You have the BEST imagination and we never know what stories you're going to tell your classmates, teachers, etc.  Just last week you told another mom that your dad was 53 and sill wore floaties in the pool :)

You wear your emotions on your sleeve, have two volumes (loud and louder!) and are extremely empathetic.  You recognize when people are different or hurting and go out of your way to engage with them, make them smile and are genuinely interested in them.  It's beautiful to watch and is a character trait I can't wait to see develop and be used as you grow up.

We love you BIG, Mase!

  6. Our oldest daughter has CP and is in a wheelchair and I always appreciate so much when children show kindness to her. It doesn't happen as often as you might think. It has a lot to do with parents instilling kindness and compassion in their kids. When you said how Mason recognizes people who are different and engages them, I thought how wonderful that was. You and your husband are doing a great job:)

  7. I have a deal with Elle that she is welcome to turn 5 (in 20 days, she keeps reminding me), but she is NOT allowed to turn 6. I'm sad to hear that plan didn't work out for Mason. Hope you guys have a great weekend of celebrating your (not so) little guy. And watch out- I am 100% convinced that 1st grade is where little kids turn into big kids!

  9. Mason sounds like such a fun kiddo with a big personality! I love the story about his dad being 53 and still wearing floaties in the pool! Compassion and empathy for others is the best trait to instill in our children, and it's wonderful that Mason recognizes the value in others that may be different than him.
