Weekend Recap - Beach Club Edition

Happy Monday, Friends!!!  This weekend was a fun one!  Thursday night we walked down to the park in our neighborhood with these crazies.  We are so excited about spending lots of time here when the weather cools off!

Friday morning the kids and I ran errands and our first stop was Wal-Mart.  Griffin insisted on wearing her princess shoes and bringing along her kitty on a leash.

Y'all.

I obliged because really, what difference does it make and she lasted about 5 minutes before she rode in the cart.  The deal was that if she didn't want to walk in the shoes she had to ride in the cart (which she isn't a fan of), so I'm thinking the lesson was learned!

Meanwhile, this kid brought his own shopping cart full of animals.  ;)   When my kids make weird requests like this my first instinct is to say no, but in reality... why not!  So I like to indulge their little whims when I can.  Dave and I took a Love and Logic course back when we only had Luke and the course talked often about giving your children as much say as you could (obviously within reason) when it wasn't super important so when it was time for something important they felt like they had already made tons of decisions.

For example... I let me kids pick out their clothes every day this summer.  Mismatched, backwards, whatever.  But on Sunday mornings I pick out the clothes and when they protest I say, "Remember that you got to pick out your clothes 6 mornings this week?  Now it's my turn"  or for lunch I will offer them a choice of fruit, vegetable, yogurt, juice, etc. but then the main course is my choice.  It makes them feel empowered and has worked great for us.

Riding in the cart because her shoes hurt :)

He was seriously so pumped to bring his cart.  ;)

While at WalMart I let them each pick out a little craft to work on that afternoon.  Griffin picked out a teeny tiny birdhouse that now is multicolored and covered in glitter and googly eyes :)

And the boys picked out these wooden Ninja Turtle masks that they colored with markers.

 Cutest TMNT I know :)

Saturday morning we packed up and headed out to the Beach Club to celebrate Miley's birthday!  Mason was ready and looking GOOD ;)

That pose!  That face! hahaha

Griffin wasn't a fan of the sand at first...

... but she warmed up pretty quickly.

The boys dug a really big hole with a group of their friends and couldn't have been more proud.

Excited to see her friend!

Manda did a FANTASTIC job and the party was so cute!

Griffin was so excited to show Miley what she brought :)

Saturday afternoon the kids all rested and I worked on taking apart a HUUUUGE flower arrangement that Dave brought home and making little arrangements to put around the house.  Lots of the time brides will leave all of their flowers at the Country Club just to get thrown out.  Crazy, right?
Sometimes they go to assisted living facilities and sometimes Dave and the other employees bring them home.  These were so pretty and my house smells FANTASTIC!

It took a while, but it was so worth it!

Up from her nap, but still a little sleepy from such a fun morning at Miley's party.

 A little more crafting...

... reading...

... dinner and then a show :)

We finished the night with forts (the boys needed their own so they could watch Turbo and she could watch more Elena).

Sunday we went to church and I hosted a Matilda Jane show in the afternoon (check out my post below!) and later in the evening I found these two cuties watching Popular Mechanics for kids together.  So sweet!!!

I'm not sure how long they're going to be able to fit in that chair together so I'm loving that I grabbed a few pictures.

I start inservice this week and we are planning on making the most of the last few days.  Lots of swimming, a trip to the Perot Museum with friends and a few last mornings to sleep in.

Happy Monday, Friends!!!

  4. Hey Andrea!
I love reading your blog ... thanks for all of the great ideas!! I am throwing a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle bday party in a few weeks and saw the adorable masks your boys made. Where in the vast sea of Wal-Mart :-) did you find these?? They would be perfect in my goodie bags!! Thanks for any help you can give!! As a teacher as well, I feel the pain of summer ending and going back to the school grind!! Happy Inservice!!

  5. I love that you get free flower arrangements sometimes! Imagine how much all of those flowers would have cost if you would have paid for them--the colors are perfect, too! I teach and we start back on Friday with in-service :(

  7. Hi! I love reading about all the fun projects you do with your kids on your blog. Gives me some great ideas of things to do with my kids. (Especially today. I need to be brave and say yes more 😬) You had mentioned that you were doing some Lego organization. Can you post an update on that? We are drowning in Legos over here and headed to Ikea Friday to try and find something to help!! Thanks so much!!

  8. I have four weeks left of vacation, and then the mad hustle starts again. I'm looking forward to cooler temps and layers of clothes, but not so much the early mornings and the rush of getting home to homework/dinner/bath/bed that comes with school starting. I usually take some time toward the end of August to get my classroom ready, and that usually gets me excited.

Enjoy those flowers! I don't think I'd have enough vases!

  10. What a fun weekend! I wish I had taken a Love & Logic class (or even known about it!) when my two were little. I read the "Parenting Teens with Love & Logic" book when they were older and recommend it to everyone!

  12. So I had to laugh at Griffin and her princess shoes. My daughter is 3.5 years old and girlfriend insisted on wearing those exact same princess shoes to the grocery store a couple of weeks ago. Hubby was working, so I had her and her 16 month old sister with me. As we were, slowly, walking to the store entrance, an older gentleman stopped me and said, "I bet one of you didn't think those were a good idea this morning and I bet I can guess who!" It made my day because he seemed to totally understand that not all battles are worth the fight and sometimes the best teacher is natural consequences. She hasn't worn those shoes to the store since. :)

  13. I'm with GG. Heels sound great at the time, but 10 mins later, I've over it!

Love all the pics- GG in the sand, the boys in the chair, and the flowers. Gorg!

  14. Also- I absolutely LOVE to see kids in the most ridiculous things because they chose it and their parents let them run with it. There's a 7 year old girl at church that comes in every Sunday with something crazy (heels with socks, a tiara, winter boots with a summer outfit....whatever), and I just think it is the best that she wants to do her own thing and her parents let her.

  15. Love GG's performances on your "stage", so perfect! And flower arranging is obviously another one of your awesome skills, they look beautiful!
