Griffin's First Recital

Two weekends ago Griffin had her first dance recital and it was so so so sweet!

She had a rehearsal on Friday afternoon and Dave snapped a couple of pictures of us before heading out.

The recital was being held at our old high school and it was the first time I had been back since I graduated in '02.  The weird thing is that the school has undergone HUGE renovations and looks NOTHING like it did when Dave and I were there.  I felt like I was in a strange twilight zone.

So. Much. Precious.

I picked her up backstage and had a total moment because I performed on this stage DOZENS of times and the auditorium hasn't changed at all.  So weird!  I had solos on that stage, performed many a concert season concerts on that stage and used to SWEAT IT OUT having to improv during Jazz concerts on that stage.

We walked out one of the side doors to the stage and found ourselves in the hallway that connects the band hall and choir room to the rest of the school.  It was absolutely surreal.  Dave and I met in this hallway and so many memories took place in here.  You'll have to ask Dave about the time he skipped school and got caught coming back in those doors and landed himself in ISS :) hahaha

Saturday morning she was ready to hit the stage with some of the sweet girls from her class.

These are the two best photos that I got. hahaha
She's on the far right.

Picking her up after the performance :)  MOMMY!!!

G and I hung out while we waited for everyone else to join us during intermission.

Daddy brought her flowers (sigh!)

Papa MAC!!!

She was so excited that Baby Beau was there too!

Stephen and Cynthia, as well!

And her two great grandmothers :)  I mean!

How blessed are we to have BOTH of Dave's grandmothers close by!?!?!

Don't her brothers look thrilled to have just sat through an entire half of a dance recital of which their sister performed for about 45 seconds??? :) hahaha  #firstofmany

Uncle Mark (my brother), Aunt Diana and Baby Beau

When we were leaving there was a little "wind tunnel" near the entry.  The kids thought it was AWESOME!!!

It was such a fun morning with our sweet girl.

When we moved to the U.S. in 1991 we left all of our extended family, so when I had performances and such growing up it was pretty much always just my parents and brother in the audience.  So it's not lost on me how special and awesome it is that there is a SLEW of people taking up and entire row just to see our girl stand on the stage and shake a set of bells ;)

As of right now Griffin is LOVING dance class (she asks us every single day if it's dance day) and so the plan is to continue it as long as she's still enjoying herself.  She has another recital in the Spring and we're already excited.

I don't have a video of the actual recital, but here's a little video of a few of her rehearsals :)

Happy Wednesday, friends!

  7. When my boys sometimes grumble about sitting through performances, I remind them about the hours upon hours that the girls have sat court side and on the sidelines cheering them on! :) G looked precious and what a blessing to have so much family to support her!

  12. So I guess Griffin is too good/special to wear her tap shoes like the rest of the girls?

    1. You clearly have nothing better to do other than troll on a blog and post an unnecessary comment about tap shoes?

    2. Truth is that they could wear whatever dress and shoes they wanted. I had her tap shoes in my bag (since she was walking in I didn't want her walking down the halls in them) and when I dropped her off backstage her teacher told me not to bother changing them.

And Elizabeth - you'd be amazed at what people have the time to do :) hahaha

  14. So cute! My family is doing the same thing as you did growing up, except opposite direction! We moved with my husband's job (John Deere) to Edmonton from Iowa two years ago. So I totally understand the feeling of just our immediate family at all of the kids' performances/activities! It's great that you have so many people there now for your kids!

    1. Edmonton is BEAUTIFUL! That's where my brother was born! And yes - it's awesome to have so many family members close by. Something we're super grateful for!

  15. So I just have to share... Elle has her first dance class today. EEK! We are both so excited. She loves to dance and do ballet moves (did you see that episode of Sofia the First?), so I hope she loves it. We have to commit to the recital ASAP, so we don't get a lot of "test" time.

  17. Love how she is on her tippy toes in the picture she took with you! My daughter MC took for a little while and then said she didn't want to go again. Broke this mamas heart!

    1. Thanks, Jamie! She really is the sweetest. And while she's been fun since day 1, seeing her personality come out and watching her grow into a little girl instead of a baby is the best. Equal parts heart wrenching and amazing. So I'm going to go cry now :) hahaha

  21. Have you ever blogged about why your family immigrated and how? I find that so interesting! G is precious. I still feel so weird going to my old high school too. I have cousins that do sports etc there and anytime I step inside its a wave of nostalgia/weirdness.
