Favorite Things - June

I tried to narrow my favorite things down to one or two - and I just couldn't.  So today y'all will get a hot mess of random favorites.

Kroger Strawberry Fruit Bars
I posted about these A LOT when I was pregnant with Griffin.  This picture is actually from a pregnancy update post - when Dave would buy these in bulk out of fear of my wrath if we ran out :)  They are better than the pricey fruit bars and are my dessert of choice right now.  If you have a Kroger nearby, pick some up - trust me. :)

Flags, Flags and More Flags
If you read my backyard post or my patriotic decor post, then you know how much I love the stars and stripes.  These are a "medium size" and are at Lowes for $1.68! $1.68, people!!!  Pick up two for your front yard.  Instant festivity. :)

Green Giant Barley Medley
I picked a package of these up at Sams this past week and used it as a side with pork chops.  DELISH!!! I will tell you - there's quite a bit of fiber - so proceed with caution. hahaha

Gold Foil Notebook
I am a total sucker for paper products.  LOVE THEM!!!
I was at Home Goods last week and came across this gold foil spiral and it was love at first sight :)

I write down blog notes, Slightly Askew notes, etc. in it and keep it by by planner for easy access.

Mine was $4.99 at HomeGoods... but you never know what you're going to come across there BUT I found a FANTASTIC gold foil option at our favorite store :)  Check it out HERE.

So.... there's my hot random mess of favorites :) I can't wait to see all of y'alls fabulous finds!!!

This and That

Today I'm sharing just a little "this and that".

- These lucky ducks -
Congratulations to Katie Field (katiegorgon2 email address) and Kim Kauffman (ekakauffman email address) for winning the Two Little Bees Boutique $25 gift cards!!!  I can't wait to see what y'all pick!!!  Shoot me an email and I'll get you your prizes!!!

- This girl -
This girl gets cuter every. single. day.
Like at Sam's Club...

And in the car after Sam's Club :)

and while drinking a yogurt smoothie like a serious toddler.  I mean.

And running down the sidewalk :)

- This Top -
Y'all.  I'm in love.  With a shirt.  And I'm not ashamed.
This is the West End Top from Anthropologie - it's no longer available in this rust color, but there's still a GORGEOUS mint color that every single one of you need ASAP.  And it's $30! GO! GO! GO!

- That Headwrap -
Griffin has several headwraps from Ruby Blue and I recently got us a matching leopard set.  My dirty hair has never looked better.  Y'all will be seeing lots of this :)

- This polish -
Essie's Mojito Madness is my current favorite.  Ignore the 5 day old polish job and old lady hands :)

So fun, right?

- That Sale! -
I talk about Matilda Jane A LOT and if you typically tune me out - tune in this one time :)
You read that right, people!!!  EVERYTHING.  EVERY. THING. is 35% off.  And free shipping.  AND if you spend $150 you get a free hobo bag!  If a hobo bag isn't your thing - it would make a great library bag, pool bag or even a great mother-in-law gift :)

Go online to the MJ site, browse the collections, and as you find things you want - add them to your wishlist.  When your wishlist is complete, please email it to me (dave-and-andrea@hotmail.com) as well as my Trunk Keeper (katkempson@matildajaneclothing.com).  Get your lists in by Saturday at noon so we can make sure everyone gets everything they want before sellouts happen.  Also... items that were previously only available to Janes are now available to everyone (and on sale!) so add those to your wishlists as well.

- This Post -

In case you've missed it on Facebook - PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE go read THIS post by Jessica Turner at The Mom Creative.  I would be lying if I said I didn't cry when I read it.  Bathing suit season is not my favorite season but - truth be told - it's not about me. :)  I'm taking Jessica's words to heart this year.

I refuse to miss my children’s high-pitched, pool-induced giggles because of my insecurities.

I refuse to let other women’s judging eyes at the pool prevent me from exposing their eyes to the wonder the sun glittering on the water.

I refuse to let my self-image influence my children’s.

I refuse to sacrifice memories with my children because of a soft tummy.

Because at the end of the day, it is not about me.

It is about my kids.

On that note, I'm off to spend the morning with my kiddos and besties at the pool :)

Happy Friday, friends!!!

What I Wore... and did :)

So I missed the What I Wore Wednesday party train yesterday - so I decided to show y'all a few outfits from this past week WHILE I talk about the last couple of days as well!  TWO-FER! :)

Last Thursday I ended up at the pediatrician with GG - and since it was a last minute appointment I was literally running out the door.  I threw on THIS buttondown with my go-to jeans and Kate Spade earrings.   Griffin was wearing her American Beauty dress (SOFTEST dress ever!), a Ruby Wrap in navy and the bunny - who hasn't left her side in close to a month :)

Sunday I wore this embroidered top by Johnny Was.  This is seriously one of the cutest and most unique brands ever.  I couldn't find my exact top, but THIS one is super cute and I really want THIS one too :)  I wore it with GAP Flared Jeans, wedges and a Lands End Tote (this one is similar)

Tuesday, Mason and Griffin and I spent the morning playing in their room while Luke went to Sports Camp.  I have a feeling that these two are going to be close :)

Mason was kissing her toes :)

Tuesday night GG wanted a turn on her brothers scooters.  She's as rough and tumble as they come and she wants to do everything they're doing.

Luke (who dressed himself as a ninja) was pulling her (while Dave was right there) on the scooter with a bungee cord - and she thought it was awesome :)

Wednesday morning we met some friends at the pool and GG was EXCITED!!!

We picked up my right-hand girl, Anna Grace, and we were off.  I was super glad to have AG there since GG was determined to get herself out of the floaty and Mason wants to be held in the water all. the. time.

Luke has been at Sports Camp all week - they do Tennis, Golf, lunch and swim - and here he is playing "Dead Man" in the pool.  Just what every mom wants to hear their child playing in the water :) hahaha

GG sporting some pool curls and a superhero mask. Duh.

Mason's busy morning caught up with him around 4:00.  Sweet boy.

Last night we had GIRLS NIGHT and it was so much fun! I mean, seriously.  I laughed so hard my cheeks hurt.  A lot.

I ended up with this crazy crew in my van...

... and I'm pretty sure I need this on a t-shirt :) hahaha

You can read about how I said I'd NEVER have a mini-van HERE (and how I learned my lesson about saying never say never again HERE and then again HERE. hahaha)

I'm pretty sure these ladies said they'd NEVER pose in front of a mini-van.... but here they are :)

Out with the girls I wore THIS top from Anthropologie and THESE pants from Hippie Chick. I am IN LOVE with the top. It's definitely ruffly - which I like - and I see myself wearing it all summer and then layered with a jacket this Fall.  I have the black and brown in my online shopping cart. hahaha
I have lots of "Fancy Pants" from Hippie Chick - but this pair may be my favorite.  I love the color, pattern and fit.  SO CUTE! (I MAY have gotten a little sun while waiting for Luke at the pool today. OOOPS!)

Don't forget that today is the last day to enter the Two Little Bees giveaway (TWO WINNERS!!!) and if you missed yesterday's recipe linky party it's not to late to link to your own recipe and check out everyone's delicious ideas.  Hope y'all have a fabulous day!!! :)

Recipe Club - Smoked Sausage Penne

LINKY TOOL NOW WORKING ON THE BOTTOM OF THIS POST!!!

It's Recipe Club day!!! YAY!!!  I am so looking forward to seeing everyone's yummy recipes!

When I was trying to figure out what I wanted to share with y'all this month, it was rainy and dark and cooler than usual and so I opted to make a "Fallish" recipe.  This is a BIG HIT with my family - and so I was actually making a double batch - so ignore my giant quantities.

You'll need...
1 lb Smoked Sausage (I use turkey)
1 cup mozzarella
1 1/2 cups cheddar french fried onions
1 can cream of mushroom soup
1 1/2 cup milk

First, slice up all the sausage...

I always pour a little bit of water in a skillet, bring it to a boil and then simmer the sausage covered while I wait for the pasta to cook.

Cook two cups of penne according to the package directions.

While the pasta is cooking and the sausage is simmering, mix 1.5 cups milk and 1 can of cream of mushroom soup together.

While things are cooking, make sure the baby is pushing a baby doll around . It helps :)

When pasta is done, put the pasta, 1/2 cup cheese, sausage and 1/2 cup french fried onions together with the soup/milk mixture.

Mix it all together, and pour it in a 9x13.  Cover with foil and bake at 375 for 30 minutes.  After 30 minutes, uncover it and top it with an additional 1/2 cup of cheese and 1 cup onions (I just kind of toss it on there - I don't measure).  Bake for an additional 3-5 minutes.... just watch it... don't let the onions burn!  It comes out hot and bubbly and delicious.

This is fantastic in the Fall OOOOOR on a Summer day that you're pretending is Fall :)

Now..... show me what you got!!!

ALSO - I posted another bloggers post below.  It spoke DIRECTLY to me and all you mamas need to read it.  NOW! :)

This spoke DIRECTLY to my heart. DIRECTLY!

Okay, y'all... I saw a link to THIS post on Facebook and I was hesitant to read it at first, but I am sooooooooo glad I did!  I was afraid that if I just linked to it, y'all wouldn't actually go and read it so I copied it to my post.

This summer has been hard for me - Luke is getting so big!  And wanting to do big boy things.... Like hang out with friends from school (and GO PLACES with their families!), go to Sports Camp (where they swim in the afternoons!) and all kinds of other crazy things.  When they're little it's hard because they're ALWAYS with me... but this letting go thing is WAAAAY harder.

Trust me - you want to read....

The Most Important Article You’ll Ever Read on Child Safety

Untitled presentation (9)
Sorry about that title.
This article probably won’t help you much when it comes to child safety.
Because, frankly, for the past seven years, I have learned one important lesson from the internet and the news: children die out there.
There are the obvious fears that we face as parents: cancer, drowning, strangulation, suffocation, choking, car accidents, being ran over, accidental shootings, targeted shootings…
but in case we weren’t scared enough already, there’s also all of the obscure stuff out there that makes the rounds on Facebook and 24-hour news channels like wildfire: secondary drowningsandhole collapsesbrain-eating amoebas in pond water, etc., etc., etc.
Every possible way in which a child was harmed or has died is cataloged and published and shared and you’re sitting there zoned out in front of your computer reading about it like a slumped-over toad (because isn’t that what we all look like while we’re on the computer?), but on the inside this scream of hysteria is building in your throatal regions because your greatest fear – losing this little piece of you that you love so fiercely – is being described in another harrowing tale, and even worse, in a new horrible way that you never even dreamed of!!!
Seriously?
A sandhole collapse on the beach?
The water and the sharks weren’t scary enough?
Or the pedophiles?
Now we’re dealing with sand, too?!
Please, please, PLEASE don’t get me wrong: I love the idea of being prepared, and I am so grateful to the brave mothers who shared their stories to inform us of potential dangers that might threaten our children.
But you know what I don’t love?
Adding fear to my fear.
Adding worry to my worry.
Adding terrifying tableaux to my suitcase of worst-case scenarios.
I had so many of those already.
And now, I’m not only a wreck as I watch my kids swim, paranoid that I won’t see the nearly undetectable signs of drowning
now I’m watching them for hours afterward to make sure they are notsecondarily drowning…
and my mama-sized panic is compounding and I’m thinking crazy little somethings like this...
You know, Rebekah got some water in her nose and choked for a while. I read that the symptoms of secondary drowning are lethargy and sluggishness. But…my kids just swam for seven hours and now they’re all sacked out like corpses in the living room…what if she is drowning right now??? Should I wake her up? Iknow I’m being crazy. But…what if I’m wrong and its too late?!..
Sometimes, when I’m not panicking in the midst of all these potential dangers, toils and snares, I can’t help but reminisce about my carefree childhood in Oklahoma where my best friend and I could go meandering down our remote gravel road, sticking our feet in the creek, playing alone in the barn, going swimming in the pond…
you know what?
My kids don’t know that life.
Because, six years ago, two girls were shot and killed while meandering down an Oklahoma country road very similar to the one that I used to frequent.
Gravel roads haven’t looked safe since.
And there are snakes in the creek.
And there could be deadly amoebas in the pond.
And there could be sex offenders near the barn.
And that’s just the beginning.
They can’t drink out of the waterhose. That’s toxic.
If the baby falls asleep in his carseat, we should wake him up after we bring him inside because nine babies died from sleeping in carseats this year (by the way, why is this article all over Facebook right now when it was written in 2006?!).
Oh! And speaking of Baby Shepherd, OH MY GOSH, there is a balloon next to him and it must be popped and discarded of because if a baby even touches a balloon, they could inhale it and choke to death!!!
And sorry, this is off the subject a bit, but did you know that having a childblow out the candles on a birthday cake is a great carrier for germs?
(not to mention their hair could catch on fire).
God?
I’m freaking out here.
Again, I sincerely don’t want to be misunderstood: my point is not that it is bad to be informed.
Information is good.
Warnings are great.
Education is a gift.
And you’d better believe that if something tragic happened to my child that I could help others to avoid, I would do everything I could to get the word out.
My point has nothing to do with the information, really…
and everything to do with what we DO with the information.
How do we respond when we read these warnings?
Do they make us paranoid?
Do they chew up our bellies with fear?
Do they cause us to imagine the worst?
Do they make us feel helpless?
These kinds of responses are red flags, and they are scarier than pond water, because they belie a problem that is deeply rooted within us, a problem that is as old as time and feels impossible to shake…
We don’t trust God.
We want to BE God.
And, deep down, we hope that if we do this and avoid that and plan for this that nothing bad will happen to our children, ever.
All of which point to a most unbiblical conclusion…
we think that the only hope for our children is us.
And that is how the simple act of reading internet articles can be a diving board that catapults us into very dangerous waters; cataloging every possible death trap and fearing every single worst-case scenario, we subconsciously trample upon every word the Bible says about God’s sovereignty, about His goodness, about His will, and about His calling.
Through our fear and helplessness, we discard the scriptures that we so vocally uphold, saying aloud “Yes, Lord! You are so good and ‘I surrender all’ and ‘have thine own way’ and all those Christiany things I’m supposed to say” while our hearts are kind of screaming “YOU AREN’T BIG ENOUGH, GOD, AND YOU DON’T CARE ENOUGH”.
If you think that sounds like an exaggeration, consider how the article about secondary drowning receives our rapt attention while God-breathed texts like Romans 8 gather dust on our bedside table…
“And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.
For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be the firstborn among many brothers. And those whom he predestined he also called, and those whom he called he also justified, and those whom he justified he also glorified.
What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things? Who shall bring any charge against God’s elect? It is God who justifies. Who is to condemn? Christ Jesus is the one who died—more than that, who was raised—who is at the right hand of God, who indeed is interceding for us.
Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword? As it is written, ‘For your sake we are being killed all the day long; we are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered.’
No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.
For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
Did you hear that?
This is just one tiny excerpt from a book that is TEEMING with hope.
Hope for me.
Hope for my kids.
And while those ancient words may not contain step-by-step instructions for keeping my kids alive, they provide so much more, a bountiful feast of peace and truth for my fearful soul…
a wellspring of beautiful principles that my starving and terrified heart devours.
God is in control.
God is good.
God does everything for my good.
God created my kids.
God loves my kids more than I do.
God has a plan for me that will bring Him glory.
Nothing can separate me from the love of God.
I am in Christ, and my children can be trusted to Him.
There are greater things to fear than death.
Granted, the Bible makes no promise that all of my safety- and wellness-centered prayers for my children will be answered; in fact, most passages of comfort in the Word were written to a people who were enduring suffering like many of us have never seen.
It is inevitable: every person dies and no one is exempt from pain and sadness.
But when I read the Word, it helps me to breathe.
It realigns my heart with a truth that I cannot inwardly deny.
It stamps a purpose and a hope upon even my worst-case scenarios.
And it reminds me that this life isn’t even the one I’m supposed to be living for, anyway, and that, if God would be so gracious, I have eternity to spend with each of my most-beloved children.
Eternity!
So yes, let’s read and share all the articles and take the precautions as we slather on the suncreen and zip up the sleepsacks and fasten the safety helmets and cut up the grapes and mince the hot dogs and AVOID ALL WATER, PERIOD…
but let’s also stop living as if there is no God.
After all, there is really nothing more toxic, hazardous, poisonous or dangerous than that.

Four and a Half Day Weekend :)

My "weekend recap post" is actually going to cover 4.5 days. EXTRA FUN, right??? :)

Thursday night we had planned to have dinner with the Shulls at the pool.  Griffin still wasn't feeling great - but I wasn't about to tell my boys that they were no longer going to the pool with their friends... so Griffin and I took one for the team and stayed home while the boys went.

Mason sported his new swimsuit...

... and he was REALLY excited :)

Since I wasn't there - Shay texted me lots of pics.  Like this one of Luke with a snorkel IN HIS MOUTH.  I figured it was one of Shay's kids and so I wasn't too disturbed.  Turns out that he found it by the lifeguard stand as he came in.  #ewww

Love these kiddos!!!

... and love that my friends love my kids :)

Then this happened...

Oh, Mason.

Friday morning started off FANTASTIC with Griffin drinking for the first time in about two and a half days.  PRAISE JESUS!!!  She still wanted nothing to do with milk, but at least she was drinking!

After some ice water and breakfast, I took her out of her jammies and I swear the fresh clothes, little bit of water and morning air did her good - because sister was HAPPY!!!

Check out that bump :) hahaha

I put her down for her nap and she was quiet.  About an hour later I could hear her jabbering, but I left her in her crib.... Mason and I were putting laundry away, playing cars, etc. while Luke was at golf camp and she sounded happy.  About 20 minutes later I told Mason to go in and tell his sister good morning and he came running back to the boys room informing me that Griffin was "COVERED IN POOP".  My heard immediately dropped into my stomach. hahaha

When I walked into her room I found her completely clean diaper laying on the floor next to her crib and found poop EVERYWHERE.  One end of the crib to the other.  All over her body.  All over all of her bedding and stuffed animals.  It was awful. I quickly (and thoroughly!) bathed her and threw her in the pack and play and got to the business of cleaning up the rest of the mess.  After I was done, I went in to check on her and found her looking super guilty.  NOT!!!

She was happy as a clam.  Squealing, clapping and proud of herself and her crazy after bath hair. :)

I'm just thankful that this is the only time this has ever happened.  Griffin has been informed that she has officially lost nightgown privileges :)

While I was cleaning up poop, Luke was finishing up golf camp.  :)

That hat!!!

He had so much fun and learned a lot - and today he starts Sports Camp where he'll be doing golf AND tennis.  He's been a busy boy :)

Friday afternoon, Miss Priss had a rough afternoon.  Lots of whining, lots of crying, lots of drama.
THEN... sparkles for the win!

Dave got home at dinnertime and I headed out.  hahaha.  It was his member-guest week and he was putting in TONS of hours, so mama needed a break.  I headed out to Home Goods and Hobby Lobby and may have shouted "FREEDOM!!!" all William Wallace style as I picked up a Starbucks and watched the sunset from my minivan. #momlife

Dave was at work before 5:30 a.m. on Saturday and all three kids were up before 7:00.  The boys ate breakfast outside while "watering" my plants.  I looked outside and saw this...

... Luke is still in his polo shirt from golf camp on Friday and Mason is naked.  Oh well :)

GG was still taking Tylenol and ibuprofen every few hours, which meant she was getting a healthy dose of Blue Bell ice cream every few hours as well.  She HATED the medicine dropper and she LOVES ice cream, so I got creative.

The boys played outside ALLLLLLLL morning and G and I hung out inside...

WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!  I adore this blurry pic :)

Saturday night we made tambourines before dinner (WHAT WAS I THINKING! HOLY NOISE!!!)

and Gibi came and hung out with us.

Dave worked until around 2 a.m. on Sunday morning and since we didn't want G in the nursery after her week, it was just the boys and I headed to church.  Shay took this of us as we were walking in... love my boys!!!

I have no words for the next picture :)

Sunday afternoon was a rainy one, so we snuggled up and pretended it was Fall. Take took Luke to the golf course to putt and the littles went to bed early.

Yesterday morning G was ready for her first outing since last Wednesday... the grocery store!

We made and ate brownies :)

And Luke played golf with Dave after dinner AGAIN.

So there you have it!  I feel like we're back to the land of the living this week.  We're ready for sports camp, errands and lots of fun with friends.

Tomorrow is the Momfessionals Recipe Club and I have something SUPER yummy to share with y'all!  Get your recipes ready to share!!!  Also - next Monday, Erika and I are doing Favorite Things again!  Get excited!

Don't forget to go enter the Two Little Bees Boutique giveaway and very last... TOMS went on sale yesterday at Haute Look.  There are still some great pairs left for women, men and kids and it's FREE SHIPPING!!!  Also - if you haven't shopped Haute Look before... if something doesn't work for you once it arrives you can return it to Nordstrom Rack.  EASY!
